Benchmade 710 CPM M4 - Knifeworks special

I think they all gone already - it was limited edition and I have 101 out of 300. But Roger sad they will have more limited editions - it will be regular as I understand. Hope they will do more in CPM M4 as well as with other super performers - like CPM S90V etc. I like Ares with it's 3D shaped G10, it will be nice to have Grip with G10. Hope they will also do some orange or red G10 handles...

Thanks, Vassili.

While a recurve gives you a longer edge the question is whether or not that edge is useful. If the edge is shaped in such a way the the interior of the curve is rarely used, it is in effect actually reducing your overall functional edge. Just a note.

Way to trash perfectly good knives. Its not the reprofiling, but rather the lack of attention when doing so- destroying the thumbstuds, maring and removing the balde finish on a new knife, oh and the 'nick' to the liner too!

Vassili,

This isn't directed to you but rather as a general comment or mild rant to all with regard to the limited edition notion . . .

So when does limited edition become standard production?

Maybe I'll reconsider this knife with a coated blade when they stop writing the serial numbers on the blade and they become "regular".

It seems to me anyone who may have purchased this knife from the first production run because it was limited may not be 100% happy to hear it will become regular.

Once again I need it for cutting not to cherish it, to me this is not trashing but making it useful.

But I may value different thing. It is hard to imagine how luck of attention may cut out few millimeters of thumb-stud, not me at least, I am kind of selfaware so far - I did this on purpose, and it works this way better, actually, it fit thumb better and fell more comfortable (of course I round edges with file).

Blade finnish is last thing I care about - you may see it does not stay to well on my old knife anyway, but on this one - sorry that few little scratches make you feel bad, but I doubt it is "removing" - I call this few little scratches... I still can appreciate this knife even with few scratches - it does cut well with or without it.

I hardly understand people who put good steel on a shelter and just watch how cool it is. I think good steel deserves work! Otherwise it is just wasting it. Also with so many hype on the market how can we actually check if it is a good knife? I saw few super steel with high resell value which turns out to be not as good in real use.

Thanks, Vassili.

the impression i received from my conversations with roger at knifeworks was that what will be regular is the fact that KW and BM will offer periodic limited editions, not that the 710M4 will become regular production. it's the practice, not the specific blade that he's refering to. we have already been confirmed for a 806M4 and others to come. hope that clarifies it a bit

This is pretty good news, I did not know about 806 M4 coming. Is it already open to order?

Thanks, Vassili.

I will dump my 710 in a heartbeat for an 806. No recurve to remove, no thumbstud to get in the way of low angle sharpening. :)

It does and thank you for that. Rant over :)

Vassilii, I don't want to take this off the subject but I thought I'd pass it on to you that the two knives I know of in SRS15 were switched to SLD , A japanese D2 analog steel.

They were the Bosen Entuko, and the big 9 inch bowie marked "high speed steel", if I remember correctly. I know of no other field knife types made of SRS15.

I tried to get one for a few years. They were always sold out when I had the money. Joe

SRS15 is different from SR101. First one is Japanese PM high speed steel and second is Swamp Rat 52100. SRS15 in the middle of the performance list, while SR101 on the top.

I think few kitchen knive were made with SRS15 with laminated blades - I have one boning knife - Golden deer. But again it does not show any special performance.

Thanks, Vassili.

How do you test or what did you do to come to that conclusion?
I have both, Ikeda SRS15 gyuto, which by now is ~22-24deg. included angle and several swamprats. Somehow, never compared them directly, because the knives are way to different.
As it is, SRS15 at 64HRC, holds very good edge in the kitchen. 24deg. is pretty thin by any standards, and I've sharpened it couple months ago last time. Nothing but stropping since then, and still whittling hair.

Thanks Vassili. I must have looked at SRS 101 and somehow saw SRS 15 in my mind. My mistake. Joe

... and it is SR101 - means Swamp Rat I guess. It not only shows excellent edge holding on my tests but as well I remember some video with chopping concrete block with this steel - so it is tough as well.

Thanks, Vassili.

Yep, I did it again, didn't I. Thanks again Vassili. I'll get it right eventually. :) Joe
