One of my first true folders was the 710 in M2 HS steel. This is a tool steel that is much more prone to rust and stain than D2. That I know now but back then I used it at work in my fish farm which means dunking it in sea water for various reasons was inevitable for all day long for a year. After the first week I saw some discoloration in the edge (BT coated blade good stuff) and I just put some gun oil on the blade that was it. After puting it away for a couple of years I discovered some rust spots on the stainless liners but the blade was as the day I put it away because it was lightly oiled.
For me the question is edge holding then toughness and last the stain resistance
