I bought a Benchmade 710D2 from the pharmacy last week and noticed it has significant side to side bladeplay when open. I returned it for a replacement and the new one has the same problem. Do all 710's have this bladeplay or am I just really unlucky? My mini and regular Griptilian had no blade play at all in any direction so I would have thought a more premium Benchmade would be even better.

I carried a 710 for years before I lost it :( and I never had any blade play especially when I first got it.

Have you tried tightening up the pivot? My mini grip had some blade play, but tightening the pivot fixed it up.

I ordered the BM blue tool box so I'm hoping that is the problem. I was just surprised because I beat the crap out of my Griptilian and it was still tight as a drum. What are the chances of two brand new 710's having the same blade play?

My good friend got his 710 recently and it had no play what so over. I really want one, they are beautiful.

This maybe an off topic question and I am pretty new on this forum so I was wondering why there is no separate Benchmade forum?

Both my newer 710D2 and nearly 10 year old 710M2 edc have 0 blade play issues. As has every other axis lock knife I've used.

Never heard of an axis lock with blade play, let alone 2 brand new ones.

What happened to you is unusual enough that I'd suspect someone---maybe the place that sold you them, improperly dis/reassembled them.

My Nitrous Stryker D2 has the same problem. The day I bought it it was bad but just needed a pivot tightening. I carry it a lot and it's a fine knife for every day EDC general purpose. I think my Kershaw Cyclones are a better general purpose EDC value for the price. Even if the steel isn't D2.

There is a 710 in the passaround forum and Vivi and several others mention it had the same side to side bladeplay. I don't think mine is a unique situation but I'm sure tightening the pivot will fix it now. I'm pretty sure newgraham wouldn't screw me on these.

Problem solved. Used an allen wrench to tighten the pivot just a tiny bit and it's perfect now.

Glad that you got it sorted.

I suggest that you invest in a T10 Torx driver, some Militec-1 oil and perhaps some blue Loctite. With these you will get the best from your Axis Lock.

I just traded for a 710D2, the 2nd 710 that i have owned. the first had an ATS-34 blade and locked up solid out of the box. The D2 model i traded for had a very little amount of side to side blade play.

A little blue loctite, some militec-1 and the D2 locks up as solid and opens as buttery smooth as my first 710 did.

Man that's weird. I got my 710 from the pharmacy recently too. I wonder if they just received a bad batch of them. I didn't have blade play but it was off center. I used one of the methods mentioned on this forum and it's centered now.

+1. I haven't tried the Miltec-1 oil yet, but just adding the loctite and adjusting the pivot screw to your preferred tension makes a HUGE difference in how the knife functions.

I have four 710's and probably have bought, sold and traded more of them than any other Benchmade I've owned. In all of the variations made, and over this many years, it's still an amazing knife that everyone should have at least one of.

Get one, you'll see what so many of us are talking about, it's that good. :)

I bought a 710 form GP Knives a few months back and when I recieved it the blade was so off center that it wouldnt open or close without rubbing on the frame. I called them as soon as I recieved the knife and explained the problem to them and they refused to make good on the knife. I was told that all of their knives are inspected before they leave the store. I ofcourse told them that there was no way that this knife was inspected by anyone. They said that it was there policy to check each and everyone before shipping. They obviously didnt check it. Anyway I ended up shipping it to Benchmade and they replaced the blade no questions asked. (blade was bent) I love the knife but it does happen that a few less then perfect knives make it out there.

They have their own forum on the benchmade website.

Same here. Got a 710 from newgraham last month, and the blade was off center. Found a way from this forum, and made it better now.

As much as I love my minigrip, it gets play. My 9 year old son told me dad, your knife blade wiggles. I said, no way, it's your imagination. A couple of months later, I noticed that it did have BP. I have to tighten the pivot every week or two. It is kind of a pain. Where can you get that locktite stuff? Is it permanent? This pivot is a the weakness of the design. On my mini, probably my favorite knife, it is the weak spot. I guess if you did nothing, it would eventually losen up and fall off. Not good.
