Benchmade 710 or Spyderco Military

Often i take the 710 to in my pocket.... the Axsis lock make the blade like a toy... in "hard situation´s" i thnk the Axsis isn´t the best kind of locking system...because the Axsis ned only a littel move from the thumb... then "there you are!"...

my experience with the axis lock has been that it's an extremely strong lock, as strong as any framelock or lockback for sure. the omega springs for the axis lock can break, but i believe the lock still will operate with only one. it also is very easy to disengage the lock. if someone were able to get their palm on the spine of the blade, they might be able to disengage the lock. this could possibly be what Dithmarcher was talking about. i'm not sure how likely it would be that it would happen, but i guess it's something to think about for a LEO.

edit: I'd go with the military given the choice. it seems like the perfect knife for a LEO. the police 3 g-10 and endura 4 g-10 are also great, but it might be a little harder to close one handed (I have no trouble at all closing my endura with just one hand, but a frame/liner lock is much easier to close). the police 3 and endura 4 are both 4-way clip swappable too, which is something to think about for weakside carry.

Your right, that M4 Milli is meant to be used. I will put it to good use. And I work in St Clair Shores, just north of Detroit.

I have owned both and I am also an LEO. The 710 is a beefy knife but I had one problem that made me sell it off. The Omega spring in the Axis Lock kept breaking and made the knife almost useless. I sent it back to benchmade several times and had the same problem occur. It could have been that one knife that had a problem but it made me think twice before ordering it again. I purchased a spyderco military after this and it has been as dependable a knife as you could ask. If I had to pick one for duty use and trust it in a critical situation I would choose the military every time.

As a side note I love the axis lock and own several of them including an auto presidio and a 940. Both have been flawless. I just trust the ruggedness of the military more in a situation at work.

really the only way you can make a decision is to carry each while you are working in uniform. friends should be able to loan you similar knives so you are'nt out a double purchase. the clothes & other everyday carry will give you a good idea as to ease of access & how you are able to hold in hand securely.

Am I missing something here?

I have both - the Military, tip down carry and linerlock isn't that cool to me.

The BM 710 is cool but has a short handle for use as an impact device if you don't have time to deploy, and the thumbstud is crazy tight to the G10 scales. I rolled my deployment area over with some 400 grit sandpaper and it's still tight. Forget about it with gloves on.

How about the Spyderco Police 3 G-10 - tip up carry, lockback super long blade and handle? I love mine and it opens fast with the big Spydie hole, sharp as a straight razor. A cop blade, perfect for a cop! :D

When I saw this thread yesterday, the police 3 g10 instantly entered my mind as well. I also own all three and would personally opt for the police 3.

Whilst I generally prefer the BM710 over the millie, for a duty blade I think the military would serve as much better choice given it's length & ergos. Between the military & police 3, I may be in the minority but the police 3 is much preferred by me in all aspects (except for perhaps the stock clip which IMO is slightly weak/short for this knife)

Thanks for the all the opinions. I know this topic has been beaten to death, but I do appreciate the input. I am going to get the regular Milli right now, and I might also get the new one when it comes out. The reason I am leaning towards the Milli, is because of the big Spydey hole. Since I live in Michigan, and we get a lot of snow, and it seems to stay cold for 3 - 4 months. So I will be using gloves most of the time. Also it seems lighter and has good steel. My understanding is that the Liner Lock on the Milli is one of the best Liners Locks in the industry.
You made the wise choice.

I'd recommend the Military. The Spyderhole makes opening faster in "oh sh*t" situations.

I own (a few of) both, and quite honestly, the military makes a better carry, and use knife. Just my own feelings.

Got both, love both, but if as you say you're going to be wearing gloves alot, I'd take the Spyderhole over any thumbstud ever designed.

If you're looking to get into Spyderco's, be warned buying a Millie could be the start of an expensive addiction! :) Since it's going to be your duty knife, I'd also agree with the school of thought that says your off-duty knives should also be thumbhole designs, so the deployment manner becomes automatic when under stress.

I would go with the Spyderco Millie, although Benchmade Axis locks are very strong locks I just like the Spyderco better.

The Military is a nice knife, but I simply cannot understand why it is tip down carry only. For that reason, I dont own one.

As a police officer, I carry an Endura4. The blade profile is perfect, and the spyderhole makes opening a breeze, regardless of conditions.

I just got my new Endura 4 in the G-10 light sage color - and it is awesome. Like the reviewer nutnfancy says "it's a smaller version of the Police 3 G-10."

I love it. But then I love all of my knives, except two Chinese blades that won't sharpen - not matter what you try. I sell them on one of my websites and pay a cuple of bucks each and they sell for $10.

I opened them up just to see what I was selling - they look cool but dulled quickly and won't take an edge at all.

I have a couple of each. It's a tough call. If I routinely worked with gloves, I think I'd lean, slightly, toward the Military, as long as the clip position wasn't an issue for easy deployment.

You don't want to use an M4 blade?!

That's what it's meant for...

BM fan here as well, get what's comfortable, you'll carry it.

I find the 710 handles to be a bit narrow, I'd like it beefier to get a better grip.

The Grip is good, I haven't handled a SPCO military, so unfortunately I can't offer my opinion of it.

I think Skimo was talking about the M-4 806 you have Billy, and while I'm sure it could be sold for a hefty profit, it is definitely a knife that begs to be used.

The clip on the Military is tip down because it only has partial nested steel liners, and originally only the one for the liner lock.
Spyderco tried tapping screws into G-10 a couple of times (in the late 90's?), with less than satisfactory results. From then on clips only go where there's steel underneath.
