I got my brand new 710 in the mail on Monday and when i took it out of the box and gave it a few flicks open i noticed that the blade had a nice bit of side to side play in it. So i checked the pivit screw and it was worked out ALOT so much so that i could see the threads. So i tightened it to my liking and it still works out after just a few flicks open. Anyone else have this problem out of the box?

Put some blue loctite on the pivot screw and let it set overnight. That will fix it right up.

Should i really have to do that with a Benchmade right out of the box though? I've got $30 knives that don't need that.

Maybe not the best quality control you've ever seen, but an easy fix and you're good to go. Enjoy the knife and don't worry about it.

I've had to do it on my 710, 940, and my Ritter Griptilian. I also have another 710 that doesn't require loctite at all, but most of my knives do, including my Emersons.

I doubt Benchmade actually makes their hardware and they probably have it contracted out to another manufacturer. They have a range of tolerances and sometimes you might have a loose fit. That's why thread locker exists because you will always have slight variances in mass manufacturing. I'm sure it could happen to any brand.

If you don't have loctite you can also use teflon tape or some finger nail polish. If you use loctite or finger nail polish get it adjusted how you like it and let it sit over night. When I am adjusting the pivot tension I always wiggle the blade back and forth like you were checking for horizontal play. This helps seat everything and assures it doesn't loosen up a little after opening some because adjusting the pivot once dry will break the thread locker bond and could cause it to loosen again.

I have a 960 that has the same issue. Sad to say, but i've been to lazy to get some loctite to apply to the pivot screw. That's the only reason I haven't been carrying it.

I've also got a few 710's that were solid out of the box. However, I did need to tighten up the pivot screw on a buddy's M4 710 that worked its was out a few weeks into use. Not a big deal.

My 710 had the same problem. Fixed right up with Blue Loctite.
My clip screws were also loose so I had to order a Torx kit for the T6 bit specifically.
A little agravating for a premium price knife but its an easy fix.
Then you will get on with being wowed with your new knife because its an awsome design.

This is not unique to Benchmade. Many pivot screws have the same need for loctite, and some cost much more.

I am the od one out but I hate locktite! I had the same problem and used plummers tape rather then locktite on my 550HG. No problems and been using it for more then a year now.

You can also put teflon tape around the screw threads. This is something I do to most of my folders. No biggie really. Or you could send it back and have them tighten it up! keepem sharp

I don't really consider this an issue, problem, or bad QC. I have always needed to loctite or teflon tape all my quality knives to include striders, BMs, EKIs, Kershaws. My emersons are really bad about it coming loose quickly without some tape.

Out of the last 4 benchmade products I have bought all but one had the same issue. The only one that was perfect was their Chinese made Vex. That's very concerning to me personally. I don't know how hard it should be to make sure the product is fit before it leaves. Sure I have tape, sure I have loctite and know how to use them both. But, I shouldn't have to. Just my 2 cents.

I personally don't mind because I prefer a tighter pivot so that it can not be flicked open without using either the thumb studs or the axis bar.
