It seems that the Benchmade 710 in D2 has been discontinued. My question is, should I get one while I still can, or will there be limited edition runs in the future? Is the D2 version good enough that I should get one just in case? I know it's a great knife, and I would like to have one at some point. I am aware of the KW exclusive version in M390, but I don't like the look of the handle scales on it at all. Overall what are your opinions? Did you grab an extra 710D2?

yep and yep. not likely on limited editions going forward, but i dont really know. d2 is a good steel. bm is okay with it on heat treat. when its gone its gone. then its the used secondary market at maybe higher prices down the road. hard to predict at this point, but many older popular bms sell for higher dollars today so......

Whoa. I just picked one up a few months ago, after agonizing over it and a Spyderco Para Military.

I guess I'm glad I did.

If you will be using the knife, then don't drop your knife budget on one for MAP. There are enough available through the exchange to negate the discontinued status.

If it will be a collector that you are hoping will appreciate in value, I wouldn't bother.
A factory knife that uses one of the models more generic alloys and has been one of their more popular and longest lived models through the years flies in the face of it being a "collector" or "safe queen".
--------
If I were to be buying one, I would watch the exchange for a model in m390, M4, or M2hss (those are listed as increasing in rarity).

Bought one of each at KW. Great deal on the plain Jane model. I have been trending towards long an lean knives lately because they carry so well in my back pocket. The 710 fills the bill in that regard,

I dont believe 710 will be long gone. Some sort of LE, short run, or a version with upgraded materials might be seen in the future.

I've had four or five, plus several upgrades in M390. They are nice, but I always end up selling them for something else.
Some folks love 'em.
If you like the blade length, the weight and heft of the folder, then get one. D2 is a good steel.

I think once the assembly runs for a production knife are gone (aka discontinued) it becomes very unlikely that you'll see it return as a sprint run. It's very hard to gear up production for a run of 600 knives...costly too. I can't think of a knife that Benchmade in particular has ever done that with...

It seems to me that when discontinued knives re-appear as a sprint run, they're really a different knife...like the current Spyderco Worker sprint.

If you want a new 710, grab one now. Great condition used 710s should continue to pop up on the Exchange for a long time to come. Used versions will be readily available if you wait and watch. They made a LOT of those knives since the late 90's.

I too say grab one brand new while you can. D2 is decent.

The 710 was the only reason I still even glanced at Benchmade these days. Now that it's gone I have no interest in the company whatsoever.

I agree, if you want a 710 in D2 I'd jump on it before they're gone. The 710 was the last Benchmade I purchased before the company lost me as a customer.

Same here. Despite they're MAP decision of 2013 and their consistent downward spiral in the QC department , I still carried a small torch for BM because of the 710.

But now IMO , Benchmade produces overpriced trash that can't even begin to compete with rival companies like Spyderco and ZT.

Back to the topic at hand : the 710 was one of my favorites of all-time. To me it was THE iconic Benchmade. But I guess they decided to drop it in favor of other knives that sell better (?) In a way it is perfect timing for me because I'd rather pick up a couple remaining new 710's before the company's QC gets any worse.

Get the KW exclusive while you can. One of the best deals out there for the money in my opinion. I wasn't crazy about the Blue/Blk G-10 either, but the milling is brilliant and you could always dye the scales or have a custom set made. Everyone should own or at least try a D2 version..true work horse.

Granted, they are not for everyone..And I'm a little bias.. One of my favorite designs.

I understand BM has taken a lot of flack lately for F+F...my two KW exclusive..710 and 810 came flawless..F+F, grinds and edge..And if Customer Service is important to you..BM's CS is second to none..

I've bought a couple over the years and always let go of it. Don't like the cheap feeling handles and the ones I had developed up and down bladeplay even after sending it in for service.

The AFCK has come back a couple times for sprint runs. I wouldn't be too surprised to see the 710 at some point. The 710 is my favorite knife in Benchmade's current lineup even though I don't own one. Sorry to see it go.
