Any negatives to the Benchmade 710 in D2 tool steel? Any reason not to buy one as the primary knife?

D2 is highly succeptable to rust. I actually love D2 steel. If you keep it fairly clean and wipe it down with a little mineral oil at the end of the day it will last a lifetime. It sharpens pretty easily and will keep a fantastic edge for some time as well. I'd pull the trigger on it if I were you. The 710 is a great knife in any steel.

Welcome to the forums, Swedge!

The Benchmade 710 is a classic, much like the Buck 110 is. Any money you spend on a 710 is money well spent, IMO.

I've carried mine in Halifax NS, which is a reasonably humid environment, quite frequently misty or foggy, and which often makes me sweat. My D2 710 is a couple months old now and shows no sign of rust. I've given it no special treatment, no oils or polishes, and it's doing just fine.
It's definitely worth the money.

D2 has somewhere between 12% to 12.5% chromium, a blade is considered stainless at 13% chromium.:)

When my wife saw the 710. She said "no" so I sold it. She didn't say that about my HI Khukuri. My Spyderco Military. My Benchmade Lum (full size 4" blade). Something about it really irked her so I sold it.

I guess what I'm saying is there is the possiblity of making a sheeple go potty in their pants.

Mine came dull as a flea market knife NIB. Nice and compact for such a huge blade though. I kinda like it except for the edge.

I got one last week and it came shaving sharp.
Axis lock is a tough lock, it opens easy, carries very well and is a classic.

The only negitive I have found with the 710 is the same as all recurves, can't sharpen them on normal flat benchstones so you might have to retool if you do not already have the equipment to sharpen recurves. Other then this it's a great knife!

I'd like the G10 to be a bit more grippier, other then that it's one of my top five picks for production folders.

and by the way.

I hope you enjoy this place as much as I do.

I just got a 710 and my son said it was the scariest-looking knife I've ever purchased - scarier than the Spyderco Military, Harpy (which had been the title-holder), or Manix. I didn't see it that way - it loks benign to me - but I think does seem to convey more of any image than I'd like.

Time to get rid of something alright...

Anyway, the 710 is an excellent piece. The biggest complaints seem to be that D2 is rust prone and the recurve is hard to sharpen.

I have ZERO problems with either.

The 710 is a good knife. I'm personally not a fan of the G-10 handle scales. Their not very grippy. I don't like the placement of the thumb stud either. Very hard to get a thumb on. But the Axis lock and blade are to die for.

Push up, not out. Pretty great placement, really.
