Benchmade 761 Ti Monolock vs Sebenza?

I'm in almost the same position as the OP. I really like the Monolock and can get a good deal on one, just a bit over half the price of the 21 I'm lusting for (non-PJ). I've decided to save for the CRK because in the end, I think it'll be more fulfilling.

For $150 though...if it's legit, I think my resolve would crumble.

I wish my Sebenza 25 had the blade of my 761.
For a nice blade in a comfortable large knife, consider the 710 with m390 steel.

I have handled both and like the blade and action on the 761 more.

If you are looking for a *slightly* lower priced, but capable Sebenza substitute, I would take a good long look at the Spyderco Slysz Bowie.

Having owned both a Sebenza and a Slysz, I was amazed at how many more times the Slysz would end up in my pocket.

Grant it that all changed with the carbon fiber small inkosi, but I digress...

There is no comparison between the two. I would just wait, and save for a Sebenza. Or find a dealer that has lay-away, and do that.

I have the smaller version called the 765.
I also have the Bradley Alias II, which generated similar comparisons to the Sebenza.

I think it comes down to how it fits you, and how it feels in your hand.
The ergos of the Sebenza were not as good for me as the Bradley, and now also the 765.
The 390 steel is a step up, IMO, too.

I have nothing against a Sebenza, but at some point the difference becomes owner/fan pride more than any real physical aspects. However, the resale value and collector market for the Sebenza is very good, so if resale and trading is a major considerstion, that could tip things toward the Sebbie.

I just cannot imagine the stick-like handles of Sebenza can be super ergo as compared to knives like xm-18, zt0562, Manix 2, and Recon 1. In fact, that is the only thing that keeps me from pulling the trigger to get one. Sorry this is a bit off the topic.

Resale value of Sebenzas is terrible in my opinion. Sure you can sell it but nobody is paying near msrp for one, even in mint condition. Prepare to lose at least a hundred bucks.

Same percentage you'll lose on just about any other newly purchased blade.

Not disagreeing with you; it is just that the raw number of dollars you lose is higher when re-selling because it is a high priced pocket knife. I am mentioning this information for people who don't know because people are often advised in this forum that they can easily re-sell a Sebenza.

well, if you buy a sebenza (or any knife) second hand in great condition with about 30% off retail, that will be about $320. Play and use but not abuse for a while and resell, you will most likely not need to take another 30% off.

^^Agreed. That kind of detail is useful in a recommendation to buy a Sebenza. Buy them used because $100 is a steep handling fee if you aren't sure it is for you.

I have a 761 and 765. I find them to be excellent. Are there documented failures of the monolock? I've handled a Sebenza and I prefer the feel of the Benchmade. It feels better in my hand. Looks simple and elegant. To each their own - but I'd be very curious to see if there are known issues with the monolock. A google search doesn't have anything jump out.

Benchmade 761 Ti Monolock vs Sebenza? its truely a no brainer....

My personal carry large seb 21 hasn't even began to wear out after 20 yrs of use.... the blade still snaps into place and locks up like a bank vault... You can't go wrong the CRK sebenza... the seb 21 is a legend

I second the suggestion for the Maxpedition Excelsa. Just a great knife for the money. If I was in the market for a Benchmade framelock then I would get the Benchmade Proxy. That is just an amazing knife, I think better than the Monolock. If the Monolock has a Sebenzalike construction the. The Proxy has a Striderlike build.

The steel cuts longer on the 761 and sharpens nice, the action is also faster.
The sebenza has better fit and finish and ergonomics and Carry's in pocket better.

I used to own the 765 which is the mini version of the 761. I didn't really like it mostly because of the pocket clip. It is made of titanium and is extremely stiff.
