Benchmade 761

Congratulations on the new folder, THN. Imo, one or two scratches or rubs on titanium handles bugs -but more than that from regular carry looks awesome. Ymmv; hope you end up liking the look. It certainly is a great design and execution!

Excellent point and thank you!

just found the perfect deep carry clip for my 761, clip finish and shape i feel compliment this knife perfectly. love it!!

They are amazing knives! Congrats on getting one!

Nice looking clip. It appears that if they would have continued the milled out portion in the center a little higher it would allow the pivot to be adjusted with removing the clip. Nice knife by the way.

I looked thru 2 pages of them and never saw the 761 listed for fitment.

Do you remember which one it was? Thanks.

he doesnt list one for a 761, look for one that fits a spyderco PM2 or the manix 2. they have the same spacing :)

I take it the rest of you guys bought copies from the 2nd+ run of 761's? My local knife shop has one of the first 1000 pieces and it is a sloppy nightmare. I got to handle that copy of the first 1000 761's for a good while and examine it. What a mess! The bearings have got to be the slickest most friction free I have ever seen, the speed at which the knife opened and closed was the fastest I have ever seen. The knife had next to no detent at all. Just merely holding it upside down or vertically then making as minor of a movement as a forward footstep would send the blade flying out of the handle at full speed into total lockup. I have never seen anything like it. I dont know what the point of the little tab on the lock bar face that prevents the lock from moving any further inwards is. Holding the knife in a standard thumb on spine grip I could feel the lock bar bend inwards ever so slightly it was kind of unnerving. Tip down carry only on such an expensive knife that has plenty of room for at least a pair of clip holes on the other end of the handle is just flat stupid.

I tried out a few knives that day at the knife shop and that first production run 761 was the most dangerous new knife I have ever personally handled. I wanted to see how it fit in my pocket but after observing the blades tendency to fly out of the handle full speed into full lockup with the slightest regular movements I did not want to put it into my pocket only to have the blade come flying out just by taking a few steps it was that bad. What is it with Benchmade and bad first production runs especially special editions for KW? I dont understand it. The 757 Vicar I got to handle that same day at the same knife shop was incredible! I would describe that 761's character as "drunk, sloppy and out of control". I would describe the 757 Vicar as "a fully competent and confident Marine in dress uniform". Lol...

Had mine in pocket the last couple of days. Fortunately, it doesn't suffer any of the afflictions some have reported. It is not a "first production run".

Loving this blade

This knife looks great. But I hesitate to by any BM these days because I constantly hear about poor fit and finish. It's too bad because despite being overpriced , I like some BM designs. I even have heard (more than once) about gold class knives being subpar right from the factory. This shouldn't be. Anyway , the 761 looks gorgeous and I'm so tempted to buy one.

This post is in no way intended to bash BM. Just my thoughts about how I like the 761 design (among others) but I'm afraid I'll get a lemon. Othe competitive brands I buy have very few complaints about them from what I've been reading.

Took a ride today and got a chance to handle one and i liked it, also after doing some research after i got home i realized that the price of 265.00 with in store coupon was a "steel" relatively speaking.:D

So i'm leaning towards taking another ride tomorrow...

Simply purchase your 761 from a reputable seller. If there is a problem you will return it. You could use your phone to call first and request inspection before they ship it.

This thread makes me want to go back and buy the 761 I was playing with today. Left with a 484-1 for 220 out the door so I'm happy but that knife definitely had a great feel too. Both I looked at were perfectly centered with no blade play even with lock loosened a bit. Though the store I shopped did let me know that the put a dab of blue loctite. I'll be back for it soon  It was a first production as well, the 484 is not.

Wolverine; I think I got one of the lemons you speak of. the detent was weak,it flicks open from the closed position with the wrist, blade slightly offcenter.lockup no matter how adjusted by the hex backlug is at its peak. Also the front pivot bolster is not flush with the scales, it sticks out slightly. And the pocket clip grips the pants that makes it hard to get out of the pocket. im very disappointed in it and sold it.There is no way this is a 331.00 knife. They should have made this an axis lock, with thicker scales, maybe even a flipper I don't think they should have jumped on the framelock bandwagon when they have the axis lock at their disposal.

I got one off the forums here and it is a great specimen. It's beautiful with great action. I'm not sure what I'll do with it thoug. I sorta went on a titanium frame lock buying spree. I'm a spyderco guy that has converted to Crk and strider mostly and i still think this BM is a great piece. Light too.
