Benchmade 800/806 substitute needed

For SD, the Axis mechanism can be defeated. There are many factors that come into play. One is the grip which holds the folder. The thumb can be the culprit. Another is dynamics involved. There are too many unpredictable factors that may come into play.
This is what I'm confused about....

I've tried my 710 in every grip I can think of, and I simply cannot cause it to fail by accidentally disengaging the lock.
So I'm curious as to what exactly you guys are doing that cause the Axis-lock to fail.

Being for SD I am anti AXIS lock since when drawing a cut the thumb easily pulls back on the lock and you can lop your digits off.
Even though i doubt you have first hand experrience, since this theme was discussed to death last year without anyone having first hand ex. i wonder
I would love to see the AFCK done with a lock back
why the PIKA is out of sight.

Maybe i get flamed but i honestly believe nobody has done anything except maybe intentionally causing failures.

This theme came up since the 806 came out and was brought in by the guy (i have lost his name) (his name is Chris Caracci) who originally worked with Benchmade for the first AFCK, which he thought as a developed Spyderco police model, but he didn´t wanted to go with Spyderco since he met a nice lady at a show, who were working at Spyderco but was (how it is said?) she was fired.

Very very emotional thing but still no proof.

Maybe that can be found in the archives. In 2003 i have searched them, to get to know more about the AFCK.

Just wanted to share this AWESOME and most of all FUNCTIONAL mod on this knife from a respected and talented teacher of the blade, the late great Bob Kasper -

http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Meadows/1770/kasperafck.html

(Note: Notice the part where it says it was "a version of the Spyderco Police model". I didn't know about this but indeed both are great designs for SD as even when the blade is closed, both could give a nasty strike with the butt or "punyo")

Heaven forbid I would ever be in a SD situation:( But, just in case, I have modified the Axis lockbar on my 610 Rukus by shortening the lockbar on each side to make it flush with the handle. This should at least prevent the thumb from accidently catching the bar and unlocking the knife.

Thanks Blop,

There seems to be some speculation but no actual occurances of lock disengagement in a self-defence situation.

We never heard of that because anyone, using an axis in sd, disengaged the blade, was defeated by the agressor and died at least.

A custom fixed blade made by Jürgen Schanz. Blade is made from D2, scales from G10, Spine 4mm sabre ground (yes i liked it thick in that time). There are some features taken from the AFCK like the bend spine and the finger choil.

Danke!

alright sounds I should stop using axis locks. I don't usually carry my 806 cause I don't like the D2 anyway. Should have gotten a manix as I usually reach for chinook 2 when I don't what the daily tasks will be.

Question, do you guys use your SD knives as task knives too? Just wondering. I don't but know some do.

If I were a Samurai I would not use my Katana to cut ropes.

I understand people's worries with the liner locks but feel that at least with me the chances of losing a digit to an AXIS lock are way higher since my first cut most of the time would be a Angle 1 traveling from high right to low left. That is when I feel the thumb may drag on the AXIS lock and releasing it. Since I take care to orient my blade to the target I don't see me putting any real pressure on the back of the spine no matter the cut.

If I were a Samurai, I wouldn't have to worry about explaining to a Liberal judge why I was walking around with a weapon I never use for anything except hurting people (even if it is in self defense). If it got to court, I would much rather tell the judge and jury how I used that very same knife to cut and butter my bagel at breakfast on the morning the incident occured, and how I always carry it around and use it for utility purposes a dozen times a day.

It is sad that I have to think that way, but I don't want to survive one attack, only to go to prison and face a hundred times worse. I don't carry a knife for self defense. I always have a knife or ten on me, and I could defend myself with them if I had to, but I can't be convicted of carrying weapons for the sole purpose of hurting someone, even in self defense.

Your Honor, I got that knife, made sure it was sharp and carried on my strong side for cutting seatbelts. Wanted to make sure that if I had to cut myself or someone else out it would be as sharp as it was the day I got it.

Don't falsify, justify.

Last night we were walking foot in a hotel that is notorious for narcotic distribution and smelled the odor of burnt Marijuana coming from under door. Upon making contact I located a cheap balisong in plain view and confiscated it. From there we were called only about two blocks away for a fight. Upon arrival one guy was pulling another out of the back of a car with his left hand. He was arrested for on view assault. Search incident to arrest revealed a cheap assisted opening knife being carried in the open positon in his right front jacket pocket. No doubt in my mind that he was going to pull the other guy out with his left hand and then stab him with his right. Although in MD you can carry any folder, even assisted opener he was charged with a deadly weapon because fixed blades are illegal and carrying a folder in the open position is considered carrying a fixed blade. I am the dept subject matter expert on edged weapons and articulated the totality of the circumstances for him being charged with the knife. Just wanted to point out that many things come into play when you use or are caught with a weapon. I doubt he would have ended up in the parking lot of that 7-11 if he had not been intoxicated.

I suppose if you are a cop or EMT, the judge will buy that, but I am neither. I'll stick with using my knives and keeping them sharpened. I have no intention of falsifying any testimony, and my justification is the truth: I carry them as tools, as use them peacefully every day. Saying that you intended to use the knife for cutting seatbelts when you carry it for self defense WOULD be falsifying, not justifying. But when you have that badge, the judge will automatically assume you are a good guy. When a regular citizen gets involved in an altercation where a weapon is present, that assumption goes right out the window. Even if you didn't see how the altercation began, and even if the citizen in question didn't have a weapon in hand, even if the cheap AO knife might have accidentally opened in his pocket, there is no doubt that he intended to stab someone with it. I sure am glad I don't live in Maryland.
