Benchmade 810 Contego

Where'd you hear that? Have you handled it? If so, is the difference noticeable or what?

Please, I would like to know this as well. I sold my Contego because under "decent" cutting it really hurt my hand. Great knife, but had the glove wearing individual in mind when the handle was made.

Yep, I'm putting a black split arrow clip in it. I don't get the idea with deep carry clips on "tactical" knives, ie. knives meant for police/military/firefighters. The Triage and second gen 0550 has it too. Imo it should be directly opposite.

I want a good grip on the knife to remove it from my pocket, and deep clips just don't (pardon the pun) cut it.

I have had this for a few weeks now and I really like it. A nice sexy tactical. The grip feels like it would never leave my hand without permission , and I love the blade shape.

I got mine several months ago and have carried it daily every since then. Great knife and it performs very very well. The M4 really holds an excellent edge.

As to the handle being uncomfortable mine isn't overly sharp or toothy anywhere but does offer a good grip.

I love the blade shape personally and would love to have one but I think it might be a little too intimidating for some of the states I go to.

I wish I never sold mine. Great value for what you get.

A solid knife no doubt!

My thoughts on the Contego.

First off, for the price I think it's one of the best offering's BM has put out in a very long time. For $128 it has pretty much blown away most of the knives I have owned or handled regardless of price..

The CPM-M4 steel is amazing in terms of holding an edge and it's actually not too difficult to sharpen. Only down side as you know is the low Chromium (4.0) makes it a non-stainless. However since I don't mind oiling my blades it's a non issue. Plus BM puts a Black or Clear coating on it.

The blade design is really outstanding. My first exposure to the BM Reverse Tanto was the Rift. Awesome piercing or stabbing point with a nice big belly for slicing. It's also very thick at the tip. It gives you the piercing power of a Tanto and the slicing of a Spear or Clip Point. I see it as the best of both worlds with no downside or compromise.

The AXIS lock, well, in my opinion is one of the strongest, smoothest, and reliable locks available.

The handle and grips work well for me. I find them useful and it hasn't bothered me yet. The ergos are subjective. You either like it or you don't like most knives. I Like them very much and find that it carries well in the pocket for a 4" blade.

I think the Contego is a great knife in all areas, especially at it's price point. I highly recommend it.

Some of my favorites are the Spyderco Paramilitary 2, Benchmade Stryker spear point, Benchmade 581 Barrage and Bradley Alias. These all have pretty keen points, I seem to use the points more than the rest of the blade. The Contego seemed to me to have a less keen point but I haven't decided if it really matters as much as it would appear to.

So many knives, so little time.

I don't remember who, but one of the fellas on the Benchmade forum called Benchmade about it and Benchmade informed him that they toned it down. I haven't had a chance to handle a newer one yet, and probably won't for a while since the Hardtail is higher on my list right now (they're discontinuing the H-D line).

It really is too thick for fine work, but then it wasn't designed to have the tip be the main area of use. I use my 581 or my 556 mini-Grip for more intricate work, but the Contego works great for skinning a deer!

The Contego was purpose built. Hence it's designation as a Black Class targeted toward Military, Law Enforcement and Public Safety use.

It's a robust, strongly built knife made from quality materials that you can depend on. I wasn't comparing it to blades designed for delicate or intricate work. There are other knives more suited for that. And consequently those knives wouldn't be ideal for the uses the Contego was designed for.

Like all knives it has it's place. I do feel though its a stand out in its class at a very reasonable price.

The Contego is a great knife, I actually really like how the grey coating looks and was partly why I bought it . The only thing I did't like was the deep carry clip. It was slow, felt insecure in the pocket and most of all was really uncomfortable in the hand. But Benchmade was good to me and sent me a black split arrow clip, now it's perfect.

I find that interesting. I've put Contego clips on all my other Axis lock knives. I'm tired of knives tearing up my jeans where the end of the knife wears against the pocket.

I got the all black version. I love mine. I like the handle more than the blade shape. The M4 steel is a firstie for me, and I don't have any "hard-use" stories to illustrate the superior qualities of M4, but Im glad that it is what it is.
Possibly my choice if I could only choose one, and oh how I hate those threads.

I loved my Contego so much that a second one was bought shortly after. I would really like to have one without the cerakote. It doesn't take a whole lot to scratch or chip it under normal use. I have many carbon blades and taking care of them is easy. Would also like a regular clip. Does anyone know if a 710 clip will fit? My Rift clip looks like it should fit also. Something to try today.
Cool, the 710 clip fits and I'm sure the 950 will too. Liking the knife even more, time to order some more clips from Benchmade!
