Benchmade 940-2 Osborne question

careful readers would have note the words "IF it were a thing for me".

and your welcome for a list of steps to reach your nirvana (not mine).

Im just going to wait and see how it looks and feels in person. Maybe the screws won’t be a problem.

Oh don't quit now. Here's your excuse to buy that full size floor model drill press you've been wanting. Or at least rationalize it with the significant other. ;)

I could never understand this not pic.
I have 3 940s. All came just about perfect and have stayed that way.......well, except for those horrendous looking protruding screws!!!
:D
Awesome knife. Just awesome.

I have a 940-2. You will NOT be disappointed. It is a great knife, and I don't even notice the protruding screws, and I am pretty demanding when it comes to F&F.

I love my 940, ive never noticed the screws, honestly wouldnt be able to tell you how long they are, i have the 940 osbourne with green scales and black blade, its a fun knife, sturdy, good action, not as good as my zt0450, but still great. I would highly recommend it., youl enjoy it im sure of it. I have however, been hunting down some brass screws and a brass clip. From what ive seen ill have to wait a month or so after i place the order, which sucks but i guess patience is a virtue . :D shabazz is great, i love his videos and reviews, and i trust his judgement in most things, but when it comes to the 940, he seems a little biased or a little overly critical.

If you’re planning to purchase it as a tool, you won’t be disappointed. The screw length will not detract from the tool’s intended purpose or functionality. If you’re planning on buying it as a piece of art, or a fondling toy, then I suppose the “faulty screws” may keep you up at night. But the good news is, if that sort of thing does keep you up at night, it’s a sign that your life is otherwise quite charmed.

Pull the screws out, trim them down and then you can call it a collaboration knife. Just don't SCREW it up.

I never noticed this "issue" on any 940 I have handled as it doesn't effect the feel as it is on the inside so I don't really get this unless it was somehow contacting the blade and damaging the edge or marring the finish but if so then the blade is probably horrible off center.

Unless you intend to use the inside of your 940 as a worry stone, I don't see why it matters.... The blade will never come into contact with them. Seems like a silly thing to complain about IMO.

Also, welcome to the 940 club OP!

Ok, I have the 940-2 in my hands:

  • The protruding screws don’t bother me too much because they are all uniform and rounded on the ends
  • The partial liner I’m not a fan of but it’s alright
  • The blade is centered

My only issue with it is the axis lock is sorta stiff and the blade won’t freely fall when the lock is disengaged. What is the best way to loosen it up without screwing around with the pivot and possibly messing up the centering?

Give it a couple days to wear in before adjusting the pivot screw, lube helps. Mine won't fall shut without having significant horizontal play, but that's not unheard of with Benchmade.

Can I use gun oil on the pivot?

^^^Totally this!^^^
Good advice. Some knives are different, but even after breaking in, I can’t get a zero play-free fall action out of my 940-2. I can get zero play and drop shut with a gentle dab of the wrist. I’m ok with that. Getting to that point took break in and adjustment.

To me it just looks cleaner this way. But understand that’s subjective and it doesn’t affect function. I have a old liner from a min grip I used to hold each screw ... cut them down one at a time on a diamond stone pretty quickly. Had to check depth often and ensure it was being done level. Stopped each one exactly flush with the liner/g10 depth of the 940 to ensure full thread engagement. I then cold blued the ends. Was about a 30/40 min. project but well worth it to me. I looked at those screws sticking out for way more than 30/40 min’s worth of bugging me !

Looks great. Nice job,

I returned the 940-2 and am thinking of going all in on a 940-1. Any thoughts ?

If the 940-2 wasn’t worth keeping, why the interest in its more costly sibling?
