Hey blade forums looking for advice. My wife gave me a bm 940-2 for our anniversary in October. Mechanically the knife is great it drops shut is very smooth and the blade is centered. A few minutes of fondling the knife after i opened it i realized that there was a bald spot in the g10 near the axis lock on the presentation side. It was missing texture in other words.

I don't want to swap the knife since it is a gift from my wife, I thought I could live with this defect and maybe I can but it's starting to bug me. I know she paid $170 for it and at that price I would expect it to be near perfect. Wil benchmade cover this under warranty? What would you guys Do?

The blemish can be seen here

I had a mini barrage with silver and g10 scalings, brand new, the alignment was off. I took it to them, they honored the warranty and straighten out the scales. Yes, i think they would but it will be away for a few weeks.

I also had a limited edition crooked river, etchings were off. They matched the best they could but still not perfect.

I was thinking of this earlier and i hate to drink the cool aid but the quality seems to be a little lacking.

These often have a spot like this near the axis bar. Yours is the most distinguished I've seen though. If it bothers you enough benchmade will make it right they are very good in that regard. I personally wouldn't send it in but that's just me.

That's the side that rides against your leg when in the pocket. I'd bet that in a few months that whole side will be smooth, and you wouldn't see the bald spot. Shit.....I'll bet that the clip side will wear down with time also. I'd just carry it, and rock on.

There was a thread on the same issue on here a while back.
It is a common thing on the 940 -2 ,I had one very similar

I have a mark near the pivot that under certain lighting conditions, looks suspiciously like a crack. I had to take out a magnifying glass (benefits of being old and three quarters blind) to see it's just a mark in the G10. It also has "bald spots", but I like Case knives and they are all slightly different, so I like to think that my 940-2 is different from anyone else's.

No it's not right, yes Benchmade will fix it. If it was mine being a gift I'd just carry it.. who knowsBenchmade might send you a replacement scale, might be worth asking..

If people sent all their knives in that had something as minor as that we'd be sending every other production knife in to be fixed.

If it bothers you that much, send it in. If it doen't, I'd just enjoy the knife. I personally wouldn't, but it is your knife afterall.

Thanks for all the replies so far. I'm starting to get into higher end knives and the 940 is the most expensive one I have so far . I think this blemish bugs me because I have cheaper knives ( sog, Kershaw, Gerber. ) and never had an issue. A few have said this is a common problem with this knife. How can we expect a companies QC ( in this case benchmade) to improve if we don't call them on there mistakes?

I had a thread about this a while ago. I believe the Benchmade dude on the forum said it was normal. I also contacted one of the retailers I bought one from, and they said they see it frequently.

I know it is common on that model.
But don't you think benchmade should have nipped the g10 suppliers in the bud earlier after seeing worn areas around the axis lock in particular ?

Every day you wait to send it in is going to be an extra day you wait to get it back. Call BM customer service, ask if they will fix it, fill out the form, and send it in. Otherwise return it and be done with it. What's the point of complaining about it if you take no corrective actions of the many available to you. If it bugs you, then take action.

I sent benchmade a email today to see if this is covered. We'll see what they say.

Hard to tell but mine is doing the same simply from pocket wear. If you have this fixed chances are it will wear down in time anyways. I say EDC it! When my knives get beat up a bit I tell myself hell, so am I 1512124520573327955235.jpg

No word from benchmade yet, it's been about a week. How long does it usually take to get a response?

^^ Agreed. Call them. Emails don't always reach the people who should be answering your questions.
