Hi ive been looking at a bechmade 940 it looks like a great edc knife which is exactly what i need. But my main problem is the purple anodized back spacer it is displeasing to the eye. What do you guys think?? and if you are an owner of one what are your problems? Also if anybody knows a reliable source to find replacement scales for it thanks!!!:)

Keyman does some excellent custom work if you're interested in scales. I think the backspacer isn't too bad as it is.

I have a 940-1 and it's a great carry knife. There's always something to be said for custom scales, and there are craftsmen on this forum who do beautiful work, but if you just want something other than the standard issue, for the same price or less than your custom scales, the 940-1 will also give you a SV90 blade.

940-1 with CF & S90V but it's pricy at $263.50. However, there's nothing to change.

Another alternative is the Benchmade 943 which is the same size as 940 but with a clip point blade instead of reverse tanto, black handles instead of green and blue titanium backspacer instead of purple.

I love my 940 and 940-1 but here is a couple pictures of some toxic green scales I have had for about 2 months now they were done by (doat) Death of all things) find some of his postings and check out his pics. I have 3 different brands of aftermarket scales and I have to say ( doat) has some of the best prices , the fastest shipping so far and his are CNC'd so all lines are very clean. When you look at custom scales look at the shape of the holes and differences between each side, some are pretty poor. Just take a minute to compare instead of being overwhelmed by flashy looks.

For the purple backspacer, just take it out and use some 800grit sandpaper. Purple is gone. Then you can anodize it a different color or just leave it as-is (anodizing is easy with some 9V batteries, trisodium phosphate and distilled water, or just send it to me and I'll do it since I have it set up already).

I was originally put off by both the green scales and the purple backspacers on the 940. Then I bought one and now I love it -- I even bought a second one (940BK) because I like it so much.

Where are those orange scales and back spacer from? Very nice.

I had a BM940. I've since traded it for something else. In the interim I got the BM943 and haven't looked back. The blade shape of the BM943 is much better for me with my EDC tasks. It truly is a beautiful knife.

[/IMG]I had the same issue as you, a 940BK that I disliked only for the green and purple color way. So I sent it to Dustin Miller @ Tango Down Custom refinishing and he did a fantastic job. Practically limitless color choice, great customer service, and durable duracoat finish. All I can say is it's awesome..

I suppose I'll be the oddball and say that I actually like the green with purple backspacer :o

The 940 looks very elegant to me the way it is with a satin blade. Excellent EDC as it weighs 2.9 ounces get as the same blade length of a griptilian
