Benchmade 940, too long?

The 940 is currently a bit of a grail knife for me. Help me justify the price tag - I've always preferred knives with 3 inch blades. Does anyone think the extra .4" on the 940 is a considerable increase? Does it feel like a big knife?

It's my favorite knife. Doesn't feel like a big or cumbersome knife. It feels perfect. I have the knifeworks exclusive. It is a superb knife.

I have an ESEE Zancudo, Ontario RAT 2, and a couple 94x's. The 940 feels like it is in the same category of size, and just as easy for me to carry. Just be aware, that some people have issues with sharpening and/or the thickness of the 940's blade. I do not. Personally, I like the 943 blade + G10 scales for my small EDC.

Edit: For my everyday tasks, I usually end up glad to have that extra 1/2" on the blade too.

It feels comparable to a Rat 2? Is the blade still short enough to get the amount of control you'd have with a 3 inch blade?

No, it doesn't feel like a 3.4 inch knife. It feels like a 3.25 inch knife. Do you have any knives in the 3.25 inch range?

I've always preferred 3 inch knives as well, but I do carry a PM2 or Manix 2 periodically. The 940 feels smaller than those.

My first experience with the 940 was not a good one . The blade felt to long with no character . Meaning it was a piece of steel that was sharpened . I was used to blades that had some type of drop . Like a spear , drop or leaf tip . The 940 is a thin knife with just along blade nothing fancy about it . I gave it a second chance and I like it a lot the blade does not feel as long as it did at first . But my first impression of the knife was not good .

I guess it depends on exactly what you use your knife for, and how you use it. Personally, I feel more control, one-handed, for curvy/non-linear cuts with my Zancudo than either based on handle shape. I feel more control from push cuts with the Rat 1 because of the surface area of the top of the handle contacting the web of my hand. I feel more control on puncturing and long drawing cuts with my 943 (haven't EDC'ed the 940's blade that much) because of the tip and length of cutting edge. I feel more control on the Zancudo and RAT 2 when trying to make thin slices with one hand because of the blade's thickness. For scraping cuts or slicing with extra precision, I usually use two hands, and feel I have more control with the longer, slender blade. For one handed scraping cuts where my thumb is on the side of the blade, I prefer the taller blade shape and thinner handle of the Zancudo.

Generally speaking, for MY everyday uses and needs (including size and weight), I end up putting the 943 in my belt sheath (although I might change that to my 940 if my daily tasks required a stronger tip).

I wouldn't call .4" considerably longer. Usefully longer maybe. One thing that I like about the slightly longer blade is the slightly longer handle that comes with it. (4 finger grip verses 3 for me). More control for tasks tougher than opening packages.

While the 940 does feel larger in hand, verses 3" knives, it rides small and light in pocket.

Just decide which 940 you want and get it.

Thanks guys. Two more questions - I'm concerned about the "Sheeple" reaction to a longer blade. Does the extra length make it look considerably longer? Also, how's the ergos on the handle? I've never been super happy with any benchmade handle designs, so far I've never found one that's crazy comfortable.

I find the 940 handle to be very ergonomic but each person must decide that for themselves. Maybe you could find one to hold first before you decide. I'll make a couple of pics in hand. Give me a minute or two:D

The 940 is one of the all time great knives, and that includes the blade length...perfect for EDC.

But if you prefer knives with a blade length around 3 inches, a 940 will feel like a "long" knife to you...

I've been using a 940D2CF as my main EDC for years. For a while I went "big" with knives like the BM710, Microtech LCC auto, Severtech auto, etc. They were all bigger than I needed.

To me, the 940 doesn't feel too long. Handle is the right length, and the blade is long enough without feeling huge, but feels more capable than some of the smaller blades I carry (Spyderco Calypso 3 or Kopa, BM31 Balisong). More importantly, the 940 is light and thin. While it's not a weak knife, it's definitely not a "beast" that feels like you could chop a tree down with it. In comparison, I once owned a BM 705 (the fancy silver-twilled G10 handled one - I forget the model), and even though it was no longer or shorter than many other 3" knives I've owned, it felt too small.

The 94X series is fairly common, so you might be able to handle one at a Dick's or Cabellas or similar store before ordering one online for 40% less.

It's one of my favorite knives to own and use...wait and pick one up on the Exchange and save some $$.

Again, this is relative to what you want to do with the knife. The handle is great for light duty work and precise work. If you're putting a lot of force into it, you will notice the thinness and narrowness of the handle. I recently purchased a mini Bone Collector (thick handle, a tad longer than the mini Grip; same size handle as the mini Presidio), and the girth makes it feel better for cuts requiring a lot of force. However, for precision cuts the bulky handle seems a little clumsy. So it really depends on what you will be doing the majority of the time with the knife.

For sheeple... if a person's part of the sheeple herd, even an annoyed stare will get them nervous. I had someone get nervous because they thought my cell phone holster was a weapon (you could actually see my cell phone and its camera sticking out of it too). Act responsibly, with sincerity, know your knife laws, and follow proper safety habits. That's all you can really do. The 940 kind of looks like a sharp butterknife IMO. I can think of many other designs that might be more "dangerous" looking.

I personally prefer blades as close to 3 inches without going over. However, the 940 doesnt feel like a large knife to me and the extra 2/5ths of an inch really comes in handy for food such as cutting my apple at lunch, it makes a nice length for paring knife. The knife just carries so small and that is the reason i most like it.
