When I bought my 940 last August I was absolutely in love! However... I've never been more disappointed with a knife! 2 months later an omega spring broke, I took it back to Benchmade and they fixed it(sort of). When I sent it to them it had perfect centering, perfect action, no play, thin behind the edge, and a beautiful 6000 grit razor sharp edge! When I got it back it had a ridiculously tight action, a blade that was 1/5 edge bevel (not sharp), a small amount of play (remember this is thumb strength training kind of action), and if I loosened the pivot the play became absurd and the centering went from bad to rubbing against the scale (still not good action)... Another 2 months and a spring broke again... ummmmmmmmm what should I do?

p.s. I adore the design of the 940 but with these issues I just cant like it as much as i should.

Love my 940 as well but also had both omega springs break. Called BM and they said that was very rare. They did fix it and send it back in a reasonable time. Good luck with yours.

The guys with the broken springs, when you are manipulating the axis lock, are you using a thumb on one side and finger on the other, to pinch the lock pin from both sides? or are you using only your thumb on one side?

Good question, I "pinch" with both fingers as you described and have never had a problem. Interested to hear some responses.

Never had any issues with mine, it was my edc for years, and are you saying the unsharpened it?

You know I'm betting they sent you the wrong knife back. That makes absolutely no sense. The blade especially is what makes me think that. Did they rough up your perfect edge before they sent it back? That doesn't even make logical sense unless you asked for a blade replacement or sharpening they shouldn't have messed with it.

Sorry to hear. Haven't broke a spring yet. Sounds like they sent you a different knife. Given that knowledge, I'm now tempted to mark mine before I send it in.

My 940-1 always has play, no matter how tight the pivot, which bothers me more than it should. So do both my Griptilians.

No, I bet they didn't. I sent in a 940 just like he did with a mirror polished edge and broken omega springs and they ground their low grit, obtuse edge over mine even though I didn't ask for it. I know this for a fact because the grinding was uneven and there are spots where my edge is still a bit visible.

If you put a note with it when you send it in asking them to not sharpen it they usually respect that. If not they will butcher the edge on anything that comes in. 940s are fantastic knives, I'd send it back in mentioning the blade play and broken spring. Alternatively you can make your own spring out of guitar string (search the forums it used to be a somewhat common practice) and fix the problem yourself.

Just send it back again with a detailed explanation of the problem. I sent in a Ritter Grip with issues and they sent it back pristine.

Definitely send it back in BUT call first and explain all your concerns!
I've called every time I sent a knife in and never had a problem!

I've owned and carried three 940's back in the day, and one of them for three years EDC. And I flicked 'em open like every other knife and never had a single problem. In fact, I've owned probably 30-40 Axis Lock equipped knives, and I have never had a spring break or had to send one back to BM for repair. So it's strange for me to hear about folks having these problems... I hope it works out for you - just keep on them until they make it right and you're happy.

Yeah I would definitely call and send it back. I have always called and typed a detailed account of what exactly I want done. I'm overly specific but they have always done a great job for me. I can't understand why they would sharpen a mirror polished edge but maybe that's just there policy. Either way call and write a note and they will make it right. People rave about their customer service for a reason. That's always been a big deciding factor me when spending a significant amount of money on a knife. Gives me peace of mind knowing they will keep it in good working order. Just give them a call and they should fix you up. Benchmade is a great company. My favorite as well as many others for a reason. I'd love to hear a follow up on how things turn out. I'm banking on a happy ending if you call and send a written or typed note. The 940 is a great knife. I love mine and I'm about to pull the trigger on a -1501. Hope you get yours back in proper working condition soon.

I've had an omega spring break on me, but the knife was very old and it seemed like the spring was being eaten away by corrosion. I always grease the springs now to prevent that.
