Benchmade 940

What is the Standard s30v 940? I have the 940 on my list but am confused by what is said here in some of the replies. I found the D2 and understand the specs but the other has me baffled.

The BM S30V is unbelievably hard (heat treat). My BM D2 & S30V are both very hard to sharpen on my SharpMaker (with diamond rods) but the S30V is by far the harder of the 2 steels. I have S30V on my 940 and D2 on my 710.
I put a back bevel of 30 degrees on each one and it took several days on the 940 S30V (10 - 12 hrs in all) and I never did get it sharp but I was able to knock the shoulders down on the 940 enough to sharpen a very nice microbevel of 40 degrees on it.

+1

The 940 in S30V is the only knife that I've had a problem putting an edge on. The S30V is incredibly hard. I love the knife, the aluminum feels nice, the blade flies open, and the reverse tanto is a great profile- very usable, easy to sharpen (profile-wise), and aesthetically pleasing. I don't carry my 940 as much lately, but that's only because I have other knives that I prefer, but it's a true gem. You'd be remiss if you missed out on one.

The 940 series is normally made with s30v steel. The one with D2 is a limited run.

lol thanks for the replies guys... looks like next payday a 940 will be in the mail. only things to be determined are from where and which steel.

i'm stubborn and still want a technically non stainless steel lol... plus, the limited run is a major plus for me. but i guess we'll see where the money sits and who has what when payday comes around

I love the 940. But feel it’s a better knife in S30V. I think the LE run of D2 940’s is just to keep things fresh and to give options on a Benchmade popular model. This is common for Roger at Knifeworks to do. He knows his Benchmade customers and treats them like friends. He does to me and many of my Benchmade buddies.

Personal preference is S30V and its $10 less.
I have many blades in Benchmade D2 and they are all great blades. I get frustrated sharpening them but they always come out right. :)

wow, I had never looked into this knife. Been too busy with Spydercos, but after this thread I'm about a hair away from pulling the trigger on one of these. I love thin and light blades, and this thing has a great blade length for it's size, I'm impressed. I've also never had an axis lock folder.... I just keep talking myself into it :p

What's the deal with the "reverse tanto"?? I hate the americanized tanto blades, but this looks like a pretty normal grind to me.

from what i've read, it provides alot of strength for the tip... not sure how true that is, or if i'm completely off base, but it appeals to me :D

I like the 940, but mine has a shitty pivot which can't even be fixed with loctite. It's also a little big for my edc. I prefer knives either a little above or a little below three inches.

You mean that "you" can't fix. Send it to Benchmade with a $5 check and they'll fix it right up for you.

The spine drops to the point dramatically giving it a tanto look, hence the reverse tanto. The swedge is ground out before the drop, reinforcing the point with more steel, while removing some weight from the blade. You can see this displayed in the photo:

has not been mentioned on this thread. I have one on a cart and am wondering about other people's thoughts of it. Looks great to me and aesthetics mean a lot. Sturdy, fine ergonomics...I'd appreciate any comments negative or positive.

Yes all of these. You're still not conivinced after reading this thread?

Did you mean to include the 950 Rift I had listed? That was what I was asking about. Thanks
