Benchmade AFCK or Spyderco Military?

sgtmike,
I would choose the military for a general purpose knife. The AFCK is a nice looking knife and does ok in the utility department, but it is more of a fighting design. The military is more of a worker. It has a good handle shape and a thumb hole that is useable even when wearing gloves. It has a strong ball detent that keeps the knife closed in your pocket.
All "best steel" arguments asside, the CPM steel used in the military really holds an edge for a long time. Likewise, one can argue the merits of plain and serrated edges but the military is available in either.
I am not slamming the AFCK. I had one before I bought the military, sold it and bought another one after I got the military. The AFCK is a classic design. That said, The military is also a classic and it serves better at general utility.

I think that the two are similar enough that personal preference should decide. Get the one that feels better to you.

Hey Sarge.

I'm not trying to sound crass, but there is a wealth of information on this subject if you perform a search in this and the Spyderco forum.

That said, I prefer the Military because it has an extremely consistent lock-up and has been more reliable (for me) in the long run. The AFCK is a nice knife and I've owned a few, but I always come back to the Military because of it's seemingly infallible design.

Hope this helps.

Take care,
Chris

I own both.
Better edge retention--Military
More solid lockup--Military
(IMO)More comfortable handle--Tie
Also, on the couple AFCKs that I've handled, the detent was terrible, the blade falls open very easily--not the case with the Military.

Thanks for the advise, guys! I appreciate the help. I settled on the Military (I guess I wanted some reinforcement from ELU's who had been using them for a while.) I'm relatively sure Sal and his crew won't disappoint me.

To those of you who replied...My heartfelt thanks! You convinced me to get the Military. I just took delivery of it and it's PERFECT (for me) in every respect. It's the best damn knife I've had the pleasure to own. Thanks again, Mike
