I'm in the market for a high end folder that I can use for pretty much everything from carrying at work (light duty) to camping, hunting, and hiking. I've been looking really hard at these two knives. I've got three Spydercos, but I've never owned a Benchmade. Should I stray and try the Benchmade? Are the differences to minor to make a significant difference?

both are very good folders although slightly different. But if the AFCK will win I would hurry up because it just has been discontinued :( :(

You won't be disappointed with the Benchmade, the 806D2 is one of those must have Benchmades. The 806D2 has also been recently discontinued so if you are going to pick one up you should do it quickly before they become very hard to find.

I have 2 spydercos and one AFCK. I like the AFCK better than my Military. You can carry the AFCK tip up or tip down, right or left hand. The AFCK is a little smaller than the spyder. They are both good knives but i would go with Benchmade.

I like them both quite a bit, but if I had to pick only one, it'd be the Military.

Why has it been discontinued?

Since you have never owned a Benchmade, get the 806. The axis lock is just too fun to miss out on. Definitely consider the 710, too.

Folks will say that the 806 is not nearly as versatile as the Military, and that the Military has an inferior locking system. I have owned and used more than one of each and neither of those things where at all true in my experience.

The Military and 806 are very different knives. Do some searching on this forum and you will find lots of details about them, but both are among the best large production folding knives on the market.

To be honest though, I recently sold my 806D2 in order to purchase a Military, but it is a very special Military. :D

Hey boobar, where did you hear that the 806D2 is being discontinued? If true that is very sad indeed.

If its no longer being produced I think I've just made my decision. Thanks for the info guys.

Big Spyderco fan here (although I do like Benchmade). Even though I think the Millie has some strong points over the AFCK, you should get the BM if you don't have an Axis folder yet (and if you're looking at the Axis model, not an older AFCK).

Right?

right.
Huh. Hard to believe, seems (around here on BF, at least) to be one of the most popular Benchies. I just traded mine off, in fact, never cared from the moment I opened the box.

Seems to me the Benchmade 710 is a better general-use knife than the late great 806D2. Just as much blade, but carries a LOT better in the pocket, and doesn't scare the sheeple as badly. If you really have to have super-duper tool steel and a black coating, there's the 710HS, too.

Go with the Military. It is light, strong, and sharp. There is a huge amount of cutting ability in that blade! The weight makes it super easy to carry. The lock on mine snaps LOUD! You won't regret it!

The AFCK has been part of the Benchmade stable for a few years (early '90s). Benchmade is coming out with new designs, and has decided to phase out the AFCK.

The last time I looked in the Benchmade Forums, I didn't see the official word from the company for the reason. It may have something to do with keeping production costs down by concentrating on the new designs and cutting back on the older ones.

Still, you dont completely kill of your classic line. (If the Stryker and Ares go, buh bye most of their G10 on liners models)

I don’t own the military but I have an 806D2. It’s a good knife. It has a large handle/blade ratio and strong lock, good for defensive purpose. But it is too big and heavy for me to EDC it. I also don’t like the oval hole, and the hole has been chamfered too much that it becomes slippery to open the balde.

Dayummn... The really discontinued my beloved pointy bananna. My guess would be that Benchmade comes out with a very nice LE version as the supply dries up then releases the new/improved version - just like they did with the 705.

I dearly hope that they do not replace the G10 scales with aluminum - just like they did with the 705.

imho the millie and the old liner lock AFCK were pretty close, but the axis AFCK is much better than a millie imho.

do like my old millie though (an older 2 screw version)

I love Spyderco but the Military is a bit lackluster in my opinion. You might consider the Manix. Considering BM discontinued the AFCK for some reason, I'd get that. If you really don't like it, trading it for a Military would be absolutely no problem. You might even be able to trade it for a Rat Trap.
