alright hey everybody, new here...

just bought my first quality pocket knife (carried my leatherman wave for about 5 years)...

i bought a benchmade 950-1 rift, from kittery trading post in kittery maine...

anyways i have a question about how they etch or stamp the "benchmade" butterfly onto the blades, because i noticed that mine is off center to the left of the thumbstud, so i started looking at pics online and EVERY SINGLE ONE IS IN A DIFFERENT SPOT!?!?

i figured that they just do it by hand and they are all a little off??

anyways heres some pics of them... look at the relation to the thumbstud and the middle of the butterfly, and the word "benchmade" to the crease in the blade...

i dont know about you guys but for a $175.00 knife id like for it to be centered

They're laser engraved and they're not done by hand; could you imagine someone sitting there with a lazy pointer all day? :D . They're all in the same spots, but each picture is at a different angle so it may be a little difficult to tell. Even if they weren't perfectly center, it's not a big deal.

Ps: Welcome to the forums.

Between this and the DPX gear threads, I'm starting to think that a majority of knife guys look at their knives like their wives and girlfriends look at their jewelry.

The OP said this was his first quality knife purchase so it is understandable I suppose.

Okay, I'm generally picky about fit and finish, especially when it comes to $150+ knives, but I've gotta ask...

What the SAM HILL does it matter where the logo is placed? Moreover, why in god's name would anybody care, much less notice and take the time to make a thread about it on the internet?

I think Brennanscott hit the nail on the head .

They're not. The pictures are taken from different angles, which is why they look like they're in different places.

Using your knife as the "base" picture, you can see by looking at the thumbstud that it was taken slightly below and to the left.
The second and third pictures were taken below and to the right, "shifting" the butterfly to the left.
The fourth picture was taken farther away from the knife. We all know that things farther away look smaller, so the gap between the butterfly and the thumbstud looks smaller.
The fifth picture was taken at a shallow angle; that is, the camera is close to parallel with the blade. This also makes the gap seem smaller.
The last picture was taken pretty much perpendicular to the blade. I probably should have used this picture as the "base," but I'm too lazy to go back now. The angle you took your picture at is why this one looks like its lower and shifted towards the left.

i could understand if the blade were off center but the logo being off. who gives a rats butt.

Crap, does that mean I should have sent my 710 back, because it looks like none of those pictures! Look how far away from the tumbstud it is!

Holy crap! That thing is WAY off!

You'd better send it back right now, that's totally unacceptable! Benchmade must have some SERIOUS problems with its QC department... ;)

Welcome to the forums. It is a good knife. Use it and enjoy. The true worth of a knife goes far beyond it's initial appearance.
