Benchmade...Buyer's remorse or am I not really in love.

I bought a BM Griptillian 551 black blade, sand handle scales, recently and I don't know.
I carried it two days, didn't use it, but held it and played with it.
I just don't feel for it like I do my ZT 0550.
I dreamt of it as I raised the cash, but now I waffle.
Who loves Benchmade?
Why? And what am I missing?

I like BM a lot but I like other companies, I have probably 5 favorites that include BM. It took me years before I got a Griptilian and although I love it I haven't carried it much (no reason, just usually end up with something else, but it would be a fantastic knife to carry for days on end.)

I don't think you're missing anything. BM makes great knives. Some I like better than others. Some aren't for me and I won't buy. I think as knife knuts we at times feel like if we don't like x knife from x company that is supposed to be really good and really popular there is something wrong. There isn't.

I have no desire to own a Sebenza. If I found one cheaply, I'd likely sell it for profit. It's apparently a great knife. I am sure that it is. But I have a lot of knives I like and if I had a Sebenza I'd prefer the cash in my pocket to the Sebenza. Die hard fans or it will probably be aghast but there it is. Doesn't make us any less knutty when popular knife doesn't do it for us. It happens.

It's not about loving benchmade. It's about that one particular blade. Maybe it's the hype you hear before, or expectations of weight or quality. I have same issue with a hinderer xm. Is it a good knife? Absolutely. Do I love it? Not at all. Do I know why? Nope.

I had same feeling about the griptilian. I loved my barrage so got a grip. Ended up hating the grip.

Advice? Sell it before you mess it up so you get most money for it and move on.

I think at the price Benchmade's are currently being sold for, buyers remorse will be common.

+1 for the Barrage, I need to start carrying it again.

i've always felt the full size griptilian handles feel a little cheap and flimsy. mini griptilian is a different story.

I'd say the most addictive part of Benchmade knives in general is the Axis Lock. It's flat out addictive. They make a quality product and they sale it like it's one too. If you're not into it, that's more than okay. There are plenty of other offerings by BM or other brands that will earn your dollar. Trade it, sale it, and try something new :)

Only three responses before the new pricing fiasco was referenced or brought up! Well played!

I am sure the hype had something to do with it. I am that type of nut.
Someone, I can't recall you right this second who, suggested I buy one knife at a time...have the honeymoon stage...move on to the next knife...in regards to not spending my life savings on knives...quickly. I totally should have listened. I bought that grip in a group of three.
ZT 0550...love it
Spyderco Native 2 (full serrated)...love it
The Griptillian...meh.

sorry you feel buyer's remorse. Try not to judge the company by one knife model. I figured the griptilian was meant to be an affordable dependable knife. Like a "low end" benchmade. Many people don't like the plastic handles. Maybe you could return it and go for a different model, or try a g10 version of the grip from a popular outdoor gear retailer.

I'm not up on the latest news... what is this "fiasco" of which you speak?

Benchmade started enforcing MAP pricing on their resellers to protect their smaller accounts, which translates to "Benchmades now cost more.". Is what it is. We can't have any Benchmade threads before someone mentions it.

Since I'm not familiar with a lot that goes on in economics I'll ask for clarification.

Does this mean that for example [x online site] has to set a particular price asked for by the manufacturer which is now closer to MSRP and thus on resellers you don't get "as good a deal" as you might be used to?

I like the Native and Griptilian well enough, but can not stand the 0550.

I wasted even more money trying to dress it up with a custom CF scale but still hated it so got rid if it.

Different strokes I suppose.

There's no configuration or version of the grip that appealed to me at their respective price points, whether they be mini or large, 154cm/m4/S30V, Ti or FRN. Then again, that applies to most of their products.

I'd like a LFTi and that's pretty much it. Axis locks just don't do it for me.

Sometimes some knives just don't do it for some people. And with everyone's varying tastes that is to be expected. I've even experienced this myself with different cult following knives: ZT, Spyderco, CRK. Different strokes for different folks is all it is.
