Benchmade....Checked one out for the first time today.

Nice, glad it works out.

I really like the M4 blade but when I check it out at the store all those sharp corners from the super scallloped g10 digs into my flesh. very uncomfortable

so I set it down and look at something else haha its like I forget.

If you are a man, and a contego hurt your hands you're a pussy. I work typing on a computer sitting at a desk 6hrs a night. The other two I do do various tasks that need done. My hands are much softer than they were when I worked with them. I have zero problems using the contego for hours if need be. I can take it from hair whittling to the point it will not cut paper in a single session of use without skin failure or pain. The overjimping issue is over blown out of proportion.

For me personally, the Contego feels in the hand like a big knife with small(er) hand ergonomics. I mostly carry big knives, but on the contego the sharp edge on the bottom of the curved finger groove always fell in the middle of my finger, unless I crowded my grip to a great extent. I ended up flipping it and now carry an Adamas as my beefy work knife.

To the OP...Your impressions were likely due to a dislike of the feel of the plastic handles. I had a similar experience when I purchased my first griptilian after hearing all the accolades it receives, but I have since learned to love the knife. For me, it is definitely the axis lock that sets Benchmade apart. In my experience it is superior to all other systems when it comes to one handed opening and closing for a heavy duty folding work knife.

I read somewhere (and for the life of me cannot find any reference to back it up) that BM did alter the jimping on the Contego after receiving many complaints about it. If so, it's possible that those who are completely comfortable with the jimping have later models? For myself, the jimping is noticeable, but not painful, but then i haven't done much heavy work with it.

The Griptilian is a good EDC all-rounder.
I have 2 complaints about the grip scales
(1) it is rough on the pocket if you carry it clipped and
(2) it is quite well rounded, which makes it hard to carry in the money pocket of my jeans and if carried deep in the pocket then it tugs on the pant smaterial when seated. I prefer a flatter grip profile.
The lightness and feel of the grips doesn't bother me much.
i have the original Grip in 440C and a Spydie hole version in 154CM. The Spydie hole is harder to open as the rounded grip scales get in the way of the thumb. I think replacement grips are in order.

I hear you! I never warmed up to my stock BM 550HG Grip - in fact, I was ready to sell it. I decided to try some aftermarket G10 scales on it and WOW! Love it now! It's in my EDC rotation.

I have a love/hate relationship with the Griptilian because of the plastic scales.

The Axis lock, however, is the bomb. Don't write off Benchmade just because of the Griptilian.

i have rather large hands and find the sharp point sits right between my middle and ring finger. most of the pictures i seen of people holding this knife, the ridge is near the center of the ring finger. that i could see being an issue with small hands, heres a photo of how it lies in my hand.

Try fondling a 710. A classic and she feels just right in hand.

I have to admit BM is not my favorite. A few homeruns for sure though

The trend toward lighter and lighter weight knives with high tech plastics does take a little getting used to for us old guys used to the heft of steel, brass, and wood. But after a bit of use I have found them to be adequate replacement materials. I will still gravitate towards knives with a bit of heft, but no longer miss the feel of my old pocket bricks. Give one of these lightweight knives a try it may surprise you.

I like it better without the hump.

nice mod man, if it werent for the dlc liners in mine id replicate it simply for the aesthetics

One of my edc blades is a benchmade 470-1 emissary. I like it a lot but I just ordered a zero tolerance 0770cfm4 that will be my new edc.

The OP said he tried a few different BM models with plastic handles........which models, other than the Grips, have plastic handles??
Off the top of my head, I come up with Grips and the 530.
Anyone???
