Benchmade Contego or Spyderco Military?

It'd be used as a workhorse.

I don't intend on doing anything crazy like batoning with it though.

Other than being similar size, I think they are two different knives.
I love my Militaries, outside of tip down clip only (SAL!!!). Great ergos, big blade, thin, light and S30V is good stuff. Tip is a pretty thin, but I've used mine pretty hard and never bent/broke it doing tasks a folder should be doing. Great slicer.
Never owned a Contego, but handled a few. I found it to be too aggressively textured. Nothing some sanding can't fix though. Some love it. It's heavier, heavier duty stock and M4, super tough, but more prone to rust, but who cares if you take care of your stuff.
Tough choice. If you think you are going to need more tip strength, go Contego. If you want better slicing, Military.
If you want a good beater, Cold Steel Recon in CTS-XHP with Tri-AD lock in blade shape of choice.

Had 2 Contegos, did them both off. I liked the knife but was disappointed with some qc/fit finish items that I'll leave out of this thread. Hawk45 is correct, they are 2 reasonably different knives but if pressed to make a recommendation I'm going with the Millie. Good luck!

You could give us a little more to go with than "used as a workhorse". A workhorse for what?

Hawk nailed it. Two totally different knives. I own both and couldn't imagine not owning either. Both are great for what they are.

That's good. Round here baton is a controversial practice at best and even those who favor it (like me) think doing it with a folder in the absence of absolute dire necessity is down right stupid.

I carry a Military five days a week as my work knife, so I might be a tad bit biased. ;)

Both are good knives from reputable companies and either one will serve your purpose.

My Military has been used pretty hard for the past 7 months. It gets full of stone dust, sand, mud, cuts everything from packing tape to trimming conveyor belt. It has been used for light prying as well. The Military is much tougher than it looks.

Batoning a folder is not something I recommend.

However I have done it( just once) just because I felt like it. And of course I would have just bought another Military had mine broken. It didn't.

Can t add anything else. The Cold Steel is definitely worth looking at when comparing these two.

Around the yard and cutting a lot of cardboard mainly.

I think I'll go with the Military...the Contego is a bit much.

The military was my choice after trying both, though you may want to take a look at the benchmade 710 as well. Very similar size and shape. D2 takes a nice aggressive edge and I've found the slight recurve to be perfect for cutting up rags and cord.

Military.

But that's just me and your mileage may vary. My needs are more piercing and slicing than prying so the blade geometry on the military works better for me.

I believe you have posted you have a PM2? If so I think you will like the Military. Good choice.

Though honestly I don't think you could have made a bad choice between the two. Enjoy your new knife.

The Military is a great choice. If you need something stronger, the afore mentioned CS Recon 1 or the CS American Lawman would be great choices now that they have CTS-XHP steel.

freaking love my Millie but Id go 810-1401 thick slab of M390 with less aggressive jimping than standard Contego. Contego will hold its edge much longer and has a sharp thick and strong tip

I carry a Contego on duty. It's a beast of a knife and it inspires confidence when being held in the hand. I only carry it in duty, off work I much prefer a smaller lighter knife or a multitool, most often a Victorinox.

Wish I could say it's been through a lot of hard use but I can't, I've never cut a single thing with it. I consider it a fighter and that's it's only purpose for me. It has seen a lot of long rainy nights and sweat and has held up fine.
