I buy a large number of high end knives annually and am spending fairly large amount of money that way. I have a good working relationship w/a local dealer and had been doing business with that shop for years. Couple of days ago I got a call from another apparently very motivated dealer (legit business, we checked) who wants my business. He offered 60% off the MRSP for Benchmade knives right off the bat w/an offer to go even lower if need be or if I increase my purchases. Apparently to entice me, he sent me a 698 as a measure of "good faith." I am a bit torn bc I am old school and like to remain loyal to the owner who has treated me fair and square. But 60% of MRSP is a better what I am paying right now. I am about to pull the trigger on a 10 piece order and am wondering if the forum could give me some feedback on this issue. Although I can always go to my current dealer and negotiate, I don't want to however insult the fellow if what I am being offered is just a bunch of bullshit for whatever reason. I am not worried about being scammed bc my purchases goes through an attorney that puts money into escrow and only releases funds when merchandise is received and checked for authenticity (the thought of counterfeits of course immediately came up, but again this is not something I am going to worry about bc of the process I have in place).

Is the 60% off offer too good to be true or could dealers (the one pursuing me apparently does high volume, including PD's and correctional staff) actually have that much of a margin to offer that type of discount?

Educated feedback will be very much appreciated.

If it's too good to be true it usually is. I find it near impossible to receive a discount that large from a reputable dealer.
However what I find more odd is that you've been a member for 9 years and this is your first post.

I usually read and not post.
So what I hear you are saying is that such discount is not impossible but unusually rare?

Maybe I am using the wrong term, but money is held in account until items are received. Then money is released. Has never been a big deal w/our attorney. I think Paypal and a lot of other online business are either offering or using it. But that is the sniff, as I can trust my current source and am not sure about changing.

And I just looked, and apparently have not used this particular forum a lot reading either... considering that I am still using a password I never changed. I am not a collector of rare or custom knives which makes me a passive user of forums in general. In fact, the only thing I collect are Benchmade knives, simply because I always liked them and I have a good local source. Leading to the current post and question.

Here's what I'd think about, the deal this other seller is offering is probably legit. But, what happens later down the road????? Is this one of those get a foot in type of deals, and slowly prices are increased to make up for the initial deal???? Personally, I'd stick with what I know and not be greedy over one sale, if you make your current dealer irate, you may be SOL down the road.
Does your current dealer treat you fair and give you a heads up on new arrivals????? Why would you want to jeopardize your current relationship with the dealer you have now????
How do you know this new seller won't let the cat out of the bag inform your current dealer?????

How did the other dealer get your number? How would he even know you exist??
If it was me, I'd stay with the guy that's done me right for years. Pretty shitty move by the other dude.

I find that hard to believe. It's my understanding that the dealer price is 50% of the msrp. MAP is 15% off of the msrp, but some dealers will sell at 25-30% off msrp if you ask them privately. Maybe I'm wrong about the 50% dealer cost, but I've had a few local dealers that I trust that have all told me they pay that price,

Something is very wrong, there are a ton of details being left out and I am not understanding it.

Am I the only one who thinks the whole story smells fishier than a week old mackerel?

Sounds like one of those Criagslist things where the buyer wants the seller to accept a cashiers check from their business agent that is about 15 times greater than the cost of the item being sold. Then, we'll ship the item to him directly, along w/the extra cash.

Seems like getting a lawyer involved for knife purchases is a bit excessive too. But... I'm just a poor boy from a poor family.

Uhhhh...wait, so either this guy is a reclusive millionaire who has his handlers bring him knives, and his attorney pays....or this is some what the smurf shenanigans.

Very Wrong, if he was beating your current dealer by a few points that makes sense, but 60% that raises all sorts of flags.

All good points and that is why I posted. I am old school and play a lot of value on trust and loyalty. On the other hand, I like to get the best deal as anyone. If this sounds like a realistic option, then I think I am going to sit down w/my current source and lay it out for him. Maybe he is able to come close, near or somehow match what is being offered to me. I am certainly on the same page w/you that I do not intent to burn bridges over one sale although it is not only one sale I am thinking about as I have been buying steady over years.

I don't know although I suspect that my dealer has a leak in his store as he has some kids working for him. I have contacted him yesterday and am planning to talk to him about this today.
