Benchmade Discount Dilemma

Hey guys, I'm in the process of teaching myself yet again that I don't get lasting happiness from material possessions. Oh well, at least collectable knives hold their value, lol.

Anyways, the fine folks at Benchmade couldn't bring my old folder back into working order, so they gave me a discount on a new knife. Very nice of them!

I'm weighing three options. I could grab a plain-jane 940 which is probably the most practical choice. I could grab an Infidel in probably the only scenario in which the price would be reasonable, and use it as a ridiculous EDC out in the sticks. Or finally, I could grab an Anthem, which I never really looked into until I got the discount. While I'm sure it's a nice product, I was always a CRK fan in this market segment, and I much prefer the aesthetics of a Sebenza or Umnumzaan.

Should I just go ahead and scratch the Infidel itch?

If it were me I'd snatch up the 940 but I'm not an auto guy. Of the knives listed I've only handled the infidel. Nothing wrong with it just not my thing. That's my 2 cents guy.

Anthem. (The choice for me would be between the 940, which I don't like personally and the Anthem, since Autos are illegal here.) What I like from Benchmade are the Fact, Vector and the Bedlam.

Anthem hands down for me. The best cutter of the lot.

If you could get a deal on an Anthem, that would be my first choice. But, a 940 would surely suffice, in my opinion.

1st 940
2nd Anthem
3rd Infidel

but if I had a Benchmade gift certificate, none of those would be my choice, personally.

Anthem is sweet so if the price is good get it. If you lose interest after carrying it for a while it should hold its value well.

I'm going to go against the grain here and say get the Infidel.

I agree that the Anthem is the best knife of the bunch, but as you mentioned, the Infidel is absurdly priced and this'll be the only time you won't balk at the purchase. A lot of knife companies would've just said you broke your knife and we can't fix it. No refund, no discount. It's found money. Why use it for a sensible purchase when you can scratch an itch that wouldn't have ever been scratched otherwise.

The Infidel also looks really cool with polished edges!

Of those 3, I'd go 940-2 with the G-10. I'm not a fan of autos or metal handled knives.

If you want something to take into the sticks (as you mentioned), maybe a Adamas or Crooked River would be another option?

How is it for serious use? I have always considered many OTFs to be toys first and knives second. Apparently I have been fairly wrong in that assessment.

Either way 940 is not a particularly “hard use” knife either. It is still very capable for such a light weight package. (And my favourite BM) Would the infidel be up for the same level of work as the 940? (I know they are totally different blade shapes)

I'm going to agree with the infidel, a lot of practical knives from bm, but the infidel is fun in a semi useless way, and one of my favorite knives.
EDC , no, but I've it's one knife I own with no buyers regret

Custom shop is a solid choice. I'd personally go with something that I've either wanted for a long time and never pulled the trigger on because of price/not needed. For instance, I've always wanted a BM Mini Grip sporting M4 steel and a Tanto blade shape. Why? No clue, but I want one haha.

It sounds to me like you want the Infidel and would be settling for the 940 and the Anthem(though they are both great knives too).

Tough choices either way, my friend! I'd personally pass on the 940 just because they are abundant and cheap(er).
