benchmade edc

Welcome to the forums, Mike!

Both of the models you mention are excellent knives, but for everyday use, I would recommend a plain edge 550 or 551. The 553 tanto is great for self defense, but is not as effective (my polite way of saying 'pain in the arse') for practical use.

I commend you on your choice, as the Grips are one of the best EDC knives around, IMO.

Thanks for the input mate! :)

Cheers,
MountainMike

My favourites for EDC are the Mini Grips and 943/940 Osbornes.

I prefer conventional Axis Locks to assisted mechanisms.

I find the full sized Grips a little chunky for EDC, and the 710 just a little too large.

Just a few random observations. It seems everyone loves the griptilians. They are excellent knives from a quality/cost standpoint. I have handled both mini and regular sizes and i rather dislike the hand feel of the larger size. The mini seems to have the equal and opposite effect. I love it.I also recently got a limited edition Benchmade 707 and i have fallen very much in love with it. Same size and shape as the other 707's so i really cannot recommend those highly enough. The only thing i can say in defense of the small grip over the 707 is that some may like the feel of the grip better for its handle width and it seems a little bigger in the hand than it actually is. I have a full size Stryker on the way but i have never handled a mini Stryker. I am starting to get really interested in them though.

a few questions about the stryker: i have heard that there is a slight rattle when the blade is open, and some one got the knife with a chipped blade. Has anyone had these problems?

I have two 913’s (and at one point 4) one did have a rattle but it stopped after I played around with the pivot and the stop pin a bit. Not sure exactly what I did but it stopped.

Mine is tight, no rattle. But I did have a CRKT Voodoo that did. I think it is common that the AO spring loosens the pivot after a while and requires periodic tightening.

I actually chose the mini over the full size, not only because of better hand fit, but the spring was much easier to engage, but I am sure it will be fine after being broken in.

On your list the Osborne 940/943 are among my favorite EDC's. Slim knives with great blades.

Check out the HK line from BM.
The 14205 is one of my favorite EDCs.
AXIS lock, thick blade, good materials, razor sharp... worth a look:D

For EDC id say a griptilian.Axis lock in a inexpensive package. I love my nitrous stryker though it would be my second choice very light weight for it's size.

The 940 and the Mini Grip are my two favorites for EDC. I also have a 707 but somehow like the mini Grip better.

I carry the knives in my pocket, not clipped, and sometimes find the 940 to be a little long, depending on the pants. But I love the look and feel of the blade and handle. The aluminum has scratched up a little more than I like especially since I haven't carried it all that much, but overall a really nice knife.

I carry a 710 everywhere. Mine has developed a rattle, I think it is the stop pin....seems to have a bushing around it. I also carry a 950 in my back pocket. But for going into SHTF places I carry my Emerson Commander or Karambit.

Same here. I bought a 551 and after using it for a month sold it. At first I liked the handle but after using it came to feel it was uncomfortable and a tad short. I'm happier with my Emerson Snubby.

You may also want to consider the 943. This is one of my favorite EDCs for light summer carry!

The Grip is nice, but I never liked the cheap feeling handles. They aren't as stiff or textured as Spyderco's.

I went with the 520, and actually just did a review on it. http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=654611

I think it might be a bit rough for EDC on your pockets though. If that's not a concern, I'd highly recommend it out of the list you have.
