Benchmade-Expecting too much?

I recently purchased a Benchmade knife, my first one. I was not aware of any stores nearby that carried Benchmade products, so I ordered by mail. I had previously requested a catalog from Benchmade. The catalog spoke of being "held to a higher standard," and "putting it all together with a higher standard of manufactured quality," and "It's a commitment to deliver a higher standard. And there's a good reason for all the effort we put into the brand...to exceed your expectations." Statements like this, plus the nice pictures and descriptions in the catalog, prompted me to purchase one.

When the knife arrived, I was surprised and quite disappointed to find numerous scratches on the blade. The scratches are not deep nor long, but there are quite a few of them. These are not normal grind marks, as the scratches are random in direction, mostly cross-wise to the grain of the blade. I have never seen any such marks on a new blade before from any manufacturer, regardless of cost. Part of the enjoyment I get from knives is the aesthetics, which these blemishes affect each time light catches on the blade.

Perhaps I am picky about this, since the functionality of the knife is unaffected. It is well designed and well built, and in every other respect it is the knife I was looking for. But the fact that it did not live up to the expectations I had (I expect new knives to look new) bothered me enough that I sent it to Benchmade. They sent it back saying, "Blade finish is OK. It is the stone washed finish that we put on our blades. This is an industry wide standard." When I read that, I thought, if this is an industry wide standard, why have I never seen it before? And, they clearly did not consider it important that I be happy with their product, despite what the catalog said.

This being my first experience with Benchmade, I would like your opinion:

1. Is this a normal finish?
2. Am I just being unrealistic in my expectations?
3. Have you had similar experience with Benchmade, or is this an exception?

I have a scanned image of the blade if I can figure out how to get it into a message (Help-this is my first post on this board) or I can email to any interested parties. I know it would be hard to judge this without a picture.

I was unaware that Benchmade was using the stonewashed finish on any of their knives. If so then the entire blade should be covered in tiny little scratches, as opposed to several large scratches on a satin or polished finish. What model is the knife?

Let me be the first to tell you to expect a lot of pro BM comments I own several my self and have never been happier with their product, I think the make some of the best production folders on the market , and I personally never leave home without at least 1.

As far as service goes everyone says they are great although I have never had the opportunity to find out my self. I do have a AFCK in need of repair after 8 years of hard use , so I guess I'll find out for myself.

Good luck.

I've purchased several Benchmade knives. I've never seen the kind of scratches you're describing. I'd return it for replacement if I were you. --Bear

I am going to move this to The Good, Bad+ugly Forum. I agree that the best course of action is to return it to whomever you bought it from for refund or replacement. Please let us know how it turns out. Good luck.

Several of Benchmade's newer models have the stone-washed finish, especially the 805 TSEK Axis, the Griptilian models, and some other knives. Many with the 440C and perhaps even some with the 154 CM now have a stone-washed finish. I personally like it. I have also seen some Benchmades in 440C and 154CM in mirror polish finish, along with others with the regular satin finish. The stone-washed finish it NOT a manufacturing defect. Check out many knives from REKAT, some from Chris Reeve, the Camillus enhanced 154CM EDC knife, etc., and you'll see many knives carry a stone-washed blade finish.

I may also add that I have had good experiences with Benchmade's warranty department, in the only 2 times I've used it. I have about 20 Benchmades and only needed the 2 times for one knife, and that was years ago.

Now, I don't see why you should feel they don't care if you're happy with their product. If the knife had obvious manufacturing defects I could understand, but just the stone-washed finish does not mean that Benchmade is disrespecting you as an owner, they did not lie about the stone-wash being a common finish...maybe not totally industry-wide as in all companies, but plenty use it.

Maybe they do use a "stone washed" finish on some of their blades, as you suggest. This one is a mini Griptilian.

A footnote: Subsequent to all of this, I did locate a dealer, and made a trip to see the full array of BM products. I looked at quite a few models. NONE of them had the blade finish mine does, including the Griptilians. They all looked as I would have expected.

I'd be peeved at Benchmade. If their response is that this is their stonewashed finish, why does their website state that the mini-griptilian is satin finished? There are no dealers in my town who carry benchmade; I would have to purchase one over the internet sight unseen. I have also never personally seen a stone-washed finish. I too expect my new knives to look new. Since benchmade does not state anywhere that these knives have a stonewashed finish (in fact, quite the opposite) I would have a problem with their attitude. Too bad, I was looking at the mini-griptilian with interest, but I will not buy a stonewashed finish, and I also don't care to do business with a company that advertises one thing on their website but delivers a different product. If benchmade's customer service were the much-vaunted thing that so many forum members indicate, why couldn't they respond to a customer's concerns about this, especially since they have seemingly misrepresented this product? Would it be so difficult for them to pull a blade before the stonewash step, put it in a handle, and send it out? Instead they leave a new customer with a bad taste. Is this the way to build customer loyalty? In today's market when so many of their knives are sold via internet they have to be ready for such circumstances.

Truthfully, they don't advertise it as stonewashed finish, but perhaps they soon will. I noticed it as soon as I got my 550 Griptilian last July. Actually, the finish on the 550 is more like a partial satin and stone-washed finish. The finish on the 805 TSEK Axis is a complete stone-washed finish.
