Alright i'm looking to buy my first benchmade. I want it to be a folder with at least a 3.5 in. blade. Its goin to be mostly EDC but i also want it to be somewhat abusable. Lock doesn't matter. Good steel.

P.S.-Under 100$ :D

Yeah, I figure your best bets are at just a tad over 100, the rittergrip (S30V) and the 710 (154cm or m2). The 806d2 is an option as well, although most people think the 710 has the better utility blade.

I love my 710, best knife i own.

And today, plucked last 705 off of shelf at local gunshop.

Oh,one last thing, the damned lock does matter, i presently own 3 BM's, used to be 4.
I sold the 4th one, a Mini-Ambush, with its unique Rolling-Lock, did not inspire anything but fear in me, made oversea's as most of the Red Box knives are i believe, where as the blue, black and gold box are made in US.

Was'nt where it was made, was the lock sorry to give wrong idea there, I really love my Axis versions, really hated the Rolling lock one.(Mini-Ambush)

Sure wish they were closer to US prices here, instead of Sebbie prices because of exchange ect..

So forget the price limit, and splurge a little, ya know ya want it.

Ritter grip S30V....Cabelas d-2.....
Just stick with the original Griptillian 550, in 440C steel. $60.....Carry and use mine as an EDC. Benchmade's 440C stands up to everyday task, and sharpens like a razor's edge. I believe its all in the way they heat treat their 440C.
As far as the lock is concerend, their Axis lock is pretty solid, very sturdy.

Not that there is anything wrong with the other two (or models for that matter) just my opinion. I think people (including myself at times) get too caught up in blade steel trends.

look at it this way,the steel is the body.....then the heat treatment is the soul....

My BM420 that I put a Wave mod on is perhaps my all time favorite knife. I was supposed to send it to Australia tomorrow to have it embellished like my friend did another one I put a Wave mod on but I love the thing so much and its such a joy to use and carry that I can't bring myself to do without if for that long. So, its staying here for now til I have another to ride where it sits in the interim while this one is being upgraded and embellished by my good friend Oupa.

Eventually mine will look similar to this one that Dirk, AKA Oupa just did a great job on. I think this is a great looking knife here.

If you want an affordable Benchmade that won't disappoint, you can't go wrong with the Red Class Monochrome. Like the Spyderco Byrd line, you get a hell of a knife at an easily affordable price. Plus, if you lose it or just beat the everloving crap out of it, a replacement can be easily found. I know I love mine.

Git yerself a Benchmade a 551 Griptilian...That'll git-r-done.

For under 100 your probably gonna have to go with a griptilian like previously mentioned or red box it, but if you look on ebay or wait around here you will find many benchmades for under 100 just post on the wtb forum for what your lookin for, my edc used to be a 940 and a stryker (before I bought a sebbie) most benchmades arent that far over 100 anyway, so if you save and wait a lil you might find exactly what you want even if its a lil more. besides money is just green paper anyway right?

My top-favourite is the Mini AFCK 814 with M2-Blade, partially serrated, with realtree-scales. Not to big not to small - but out of production :grumpy: .

You can't go wrong w/ the Ritter Grip. Great all around do anything kind of knife.

Lots of good suggestions, here. Of course, Benchmade has lots of good knives, so it's easy to come up with good recommendations... :D

My own vote would be either a 551 Griptillian in D2 (that's what I've got, so it stands to reason... ) or saving up for something a bit more expensive. Of course, with internet prices, you could probably get a 551 Griptillian in 440C plus a Monochrome for somewhere near $100... that way, you'd not only have 2 good knives, you'd also have a beater and a nice user. And, it'd be a good way to become acquainted with the Axis lock. And, and :D it would give you a good idea of what you do and don't want in a more expensive folder...

Yep, my vote is to shop around and get a 551 and a Monochrome!

For under $100, your best choice is a Griptilian. If you can swing just a few more bucks, things really start to open up with quality. G10 scales, 154CM or S30V steel (or D2 or M2). Knives like the 705/710 (little/big), 806D2, or 921 Switchback. My favorite is the 710HS in M2 steel (high-carbon, non-stainless), which can be had for about $120.

Nothing wrong with the Griptilians, mind, it's just my preference that if I'm spending that much on a knife, I'd prefer something a bit nicer looking than plastic handles. They make great workers though, the plastic is very durable.
