You say he is responsible and owns "many" knives, but, does he own many "quality" knives, or just many knives like mTech and Wal-Mart stuff?
Either way, if he's responsible and knows knives and if you're willing to spend the $, I'd say be the grown up and get him a more practical BM; a nice wood handled grizzly creek, 950 rift, even a nicer full sized griptilian, any one which is still a lot of knife, especially for a 13 yr. old, but at 3 oz. less weight, better blade stock and profile, and -1/4" of more carry friendly pocket space.
Then sit down and talk knives with him and explain to him why you didn't get him the Adamas, because it's a thick and impractical slab of hand tank at 7+ oz. and 3/4" thick handle. If he still wants an Adamas after a good heart to heart about knives, let him enjoy the pride of ownership by saving up and buying his very own, (and also put 100% of the risk the disappointment in such a big ol' heavy slab-o-knife all on his own as well), while still getting an awesome, much more edc friendly knife from his favorite cousin.
Win win.
