I'm new to Benchmades, and just received my first one today, a 581. Also just ordered a 550 Grip from the site. The question I have is, what makes a BM fall under Gold Class? Is it just the materials used? Are there other classes, like different tiers?

Theres 3 classes, Gold (premier), Blue (the main product line), and Black (military oriented). There used to be a fourth, the Red class (budget). Red was discontinued and absorbed into the H&K lineup I believe.

Gold class models are always a model from the regular Blue or Black lineup, but made up with nicer materials and steels, and typically with a much higher level of fit and finish. They're borderline custom :D

Thanks jbob, so does a Gold Class knife get made to order, or does BM just make runs of them? Do they announce what they are coming out with?

I wanted that Gold class Grip, but never found it anywhere.
Has there ever been a Gold class TSEK 805 or the AFCK 806?

Got one of the Gold Class Grip, but its not really for me and it seems too nice to use and abuse like my other knives. She stays locked up in a vault, all alone, untouched. One day I think I'll eventually sell it to someone who'd use and enjoy it.

They make them in single batches. Theyre all one-time runs and i dont believe theyve ever done a model twice, but i might be wrong there. I think they pick one or two models to produce every year.

REV: the whole list of gold class knives is on their site here::::

There's no tsek but there is a pretty cool afck http://www.benchmade.com/products/806DM-701
Note that it mentions it was available only to dealers OUTSIDE of America...

A lot of the real popular ones never make up for sale anywhere. They get claimed and bought up by those in the know long before they have a chance. I got pretty lucky finding my 530-111, They were never on sale at any site and a guy here on the forum happened to find one at a store in Utah and grabbed it for me :)

Based on the info in that link, there hasn't been a gold class 581. Might there be a chance that they'll make them? I really like the one I got.
