i am apart of a training program for high school aged kids at our local fire department. we train with the full timers in use with hoses, equipment, car extract etc... and even do weekly ride alongs for ems calls and fires. me being a knife freek i dug into my collection and grabbed my somewhat new benchmade grip h2o with x15-tn steel. i choose that knife for my days at the department because i knew i would spend hours at a time working with hoses and sweating my butt off in hot bunker pants.
lets just say that the knife's claim to be a water knife is a stretch. after getting off my bunker gear after about 4 hours in the 85 degree sun the knife was coverd in rust from sweat & hydrant water. not to mention the hardwear which does not appear to be " rust proof " did very bad aswell. shouldent a knife company or steel company test the " waterproofness " before relasing a knife like that?. i do realize that sweat is loaded with salt which is very curosive but i would expect it to do very well seeing that it was designed for aplications like that. what do you think? ( wish i had pics but took steel wool to it before thinking about you guys)

now to the interesting part. what do firefighters carry who are not interested in knives that only see them as tools?

so far i have seen 2 spyderco 93mm orange rescue knives ( good choice ). several benchmade 2550's with a coated plain edge ( coated for water resistance i would guess?). those benchmades where tax payer purchased i believe. and all of the have been carried since about 2006 and none have needed spring replacement. and a few boker switch blades which i was not impressed with at all. all guys carry a benchmade rescue hook and gerber multi tools on their belts both of which where issued thanks to the tax payers. some guys have switched to leatherman wave's and supertool 300's. the last things i can think of are stream light pen lights that where issued and pelican helmet lights and angle head lights straped on their bunker jackets.
what do you think about what the firefighter/ems issue gear and what do you carry if you are in a similar service?

Any spyderco salt series if it has to be a folder, or one of the old H1 steel benchmade fixed blades. My sweat is not very corrosive though, that really does depend on the individual. I can even get by with carrying my rc3 against my skin for a hot sweaty hike without it rusting up.

no doubt those h1 spyderco's are awesome knives but i do not buy any foreign made knives. i know japan makes good blades but i try and support the american workers first

What about a Microtech UMS Firefighter ? Would it be corrosion resistant enough?
that might be a good choice but i dont think they have made that knife since about 2004 have they? do you know where i could find one? not to mention im not a huge microtech fan at the moment for some recent business practices. i was thinking about getting a zt 0560 and putting a orange rick hinderer scale on it but it does not look like he will make g10 scales for the 0560 like he did for the 0550. i am looking at a benchmade 915 triage with the black coated blade in a plain edge. i figure the n680 steel with a black blade coating will make a damn near rustproof knife.

Microtech Firefither FTL... Hahahaha

Yea, the Spyderco Salt series Will Not Rust.

they did a run of thoe where they misspelled " firefighter" and they called it the firefighter by adding a red paint job....... how will that help a firefighter? not to mention none of our gear is red. orange or safety yellow would be a lot better for a firefighter

I get wanting to support American Workers...
You realize you are still supporting American workers right?
You work in America... the money goes to the people here in America.. and helps pay our American workers.

Just because a knife is not made here doesn't mean it's Anti-America.
I own several knives.. and I mean SEVERAL.
But some are made here, some are not.
It doesn't matter to me where a knife is made as long as it's a good knife.

As far as I know the Spyderco Salt knives are VERY good knives.
And very rust resistant.

It was after all an AMERICAN made knife that failed on you.
So why not give the Japanese knife a chance?

like i said i know they are good knives.... i did say they where anti american or a bad person for carrying them.

from personal family experience i know what a factory means to a small town or community. i live in the heart of michigan and watching the auto industry die a few years ago was a heart break and i dont want to see that happen to golden colorado, oregon city oregon, tualtian oregon ,or the steel factories etc.... so i make sure my hobbie money stays in the usa. however i realize that there are good knives coming from over seas they just do not intrest me

Yep. They spelled it Firefither. That's why I posted
Firefither For The Loss.

IMO An automatic with a small deployment button that will be hard to press with gloves on is a bad decision.

The spyderco spyderhawk has a big hole for use with gloves

That steel that BM used is very rust resistance. The H1 that Spyderco uses is rust proof. There have been people that have tried to make it rust and couldn't.

Personally whilst on duty over the years I've carried a variety of knives and MTs.
Including but not limited to
-Aussie made 110 copy
-Vic Angler
-LM Fuse
-LM Wave
-Gerber multi plier 600(or something like)
-Gerber Crux
-Schrade simple simon
-Stanley combo folder box cutter with the replaceable blades(POS IMO)but functional.
+various others.
These days I will have LM Surge (big & h e a v y but the boss bought those for the crew),
Smith N Wesson 1st Responder rescue knife-2nd one Ive owned (lost the spring loaded glass punch on the road one dark night).
Or VIC rescue tool I was generously awarded in a giveaway by Carl over in Trad subforum(thanks Carl).
Off and On duty I always have a RES Q Me mini tool and a decent folder (at present Tidioute mini lockback hunter )

For your training sessions could I suggest the tool box on your truck should contain a cheap lino knife or stanley knife .Who cares if its broken or lost its cheap to replace-that would be the attitude of most firies towards a knife.
With that in mind Firefighters are as individual as snowflakes so don't expect a definitive answer too soon..
Good post though.

cheers.
It was Jake not Carl-duuh sorry guys.

Ive got a X15TN Grip and I do not recognize your experience with it.

The X15TN steel was tested with and handled a 96 hour salt spray (nacl) test with an absolute minimum of rust. That's extremely good in terms of rust resistance. I've carried mine fishing and have rinsed it in saltwater and left it to dry several times over the course of a trip with no rust whatsoever. Sea water is pretty hard on metals especially when its given time to oxidise.

I've also had it clipped inside my shorts with skin/sweat contact and no rust has showed.

I find it strange that yours was covered in rust in just 4 hours.

The hardware and internals are regular stainless steel with the liners being 420J2.

Figured i'd put mine in there. I carry a zt 0400, A buddy carries a rescue blur. Another carries a sog aegis tanto. a few of the guys in other houses carry the biggest cheapest crap they can get thier hands on. I looked into the bm triage and sog bi polar but thats as far as i got with that. Alot of us carry multi tools. I like my zt because of the slight recurve and scalloped serrations for webbing or seat belts, and it is thick enough i can pry some with it.

forgot to say I have had no real issues with rust just dirt through large long structure fires wash downs anywhere from 2hrs to 8-9 hrs in sweaty pocket. Must be the dlc coating?

Ive carried a spyderco cts xhp millie now for about a year its been through long bunker gear sessions, structure fire, grass/woods fires no sign of rust except in the jimping which I just sand off.

Straight from a fellow fire fighter:

this was my old firecoat knife. i bought a jumpmaster and gifted this one away to a Lt. so it is still in service :)

I believe this one has been given to a fellow fire fighter and Tony carries a Jumpmaster, but I am under correction.

some interesting posts so far..... i had an xhp millie for a short time and my truck decided it wanted a lot of gas so it is gone as of now. i would love to find an orange millie with a super steel. spyderco should make an orange millie with 20cv i would be all over that knife for around $225 ( put some high polish hardwear on it aswell)

You must have extremely corrosive sweat I'm guessing. I've carried mine multiple times fishing off the beach and no signs of rust. Even after the knife being submerged in saltwater and not rinsed for many hours. Any pic of corrosion? I would assume it just wiped off? Genuinely curious.. :)
