Benchmade Griptilian: 550 or 551?

I have 2 sheepfoot mini's and a 551-1 drop point. I really like the mod sheepfoot for a working blade. But obviously I like both. The 551.1 is my latest acquisition

I definitely prefer the 550 - modified sheepsfoot. I've owned both - I sold the 551. I do a lot of cutting and very little stabbing or "penetrating". My Benchmade 550HG with aftermarket G10 scales is #1 in my EDC rotation.

I think that they are both about the same, but I prefer the drop point and I much prefer the thumb studs to the oval hole.

Exactly. With a big HOLE in the blade, they look like a learning disabled Spyderco. *Shudder*

<----- Has never owned a Spyderco, or any other knife with a huge HOLE in the blade, where the thumb stud belongs. Never will.

i've got a 550 and for the time i had it i really emjoyed the sheepfoot blade. was very nice for foodprep and tore boxes down with no problem either. unfortunatly i cannot comment further as it's gone for repairs...

I prefer holes. Thumb studs get in the way of sharpening and cutting, snag on clothing, and don't work as well for opening.
OTOH, I don't like hollow grinds, but still would prefer the 550.

I wondered why my Google searches of BF were showing a 2003 thread...because it's back from the dead lol.

Anyway I just went with the 550-1. The hole matches with my Spydercos nicely and I don't have a sheepsfoot blade, but like the way it looks and I'm sure it will do my mundane EDC and range type stuff just fine. The 20CV steel sounds pretty awesome and the dual color gray/blue G10 handle is great (I still like the orange/black color combo may need to get a mini grip in that scheme, may even go full retard and end up with a doug ritter mini M390)
