Still trying to decide what Benchmade to get any body know anything about the Benchmade Griptilian Axis Orange H2O‏?

I do not think they make the griptilian with H20 steel, somebody correct me if I am wrong, but the grip is a great knife. I have the 551 and love it.

No they do not use H2O steel. They use their own steel called X15.

Go to their website and have a look:

X15 T.N: This French steel was developed for the aircraft industry for jet ball bearings, as well as the medical industry for scalpels. It has the ability to resist rust in the worst of conditions while maintaining ample edge retention. The capability behind this steel is in the way it is manufactured, resulting in the finest steel for use in harsh environments such as salt water. The edge on an X15 T.N blade is easier to maintain.

Is the knife similar to the Salt series in that the whole thing is constructed to be resistant to corrosion or is just the blade supposed to be corrosion resistant?

I like the concept but can't see the point of the knife if the whole thing isn't made from highly-corrosion resistant material.

I'm pretty sure all they did was change the blade out on it. The liner materials are pretty corrosion resistant already.

They changed the blade steel, changed the liners to a polished 420J, polished all the screws, and added a polished clip. The stop pin and AXIS bar have a different shade to them than my other Grip so that may be made of a different steel as well.

So far mine has showed no signs of rust but the worst it has seen is some water skiing and whatever food acids I could find around the house. I still haven't got the chance to expose it to any saltwater.

Good to know! Though I've seen X15TN steel rust, it's only been after long-term salt water exposure, and fine steel wool took it off without leaving a sign that it had ever happened.

There is a quite a wealth of information on H1, but a severe lack of anything substantial on X15TN. Of all the threads I have read what I took away was that H1 is completely impervious to corrosion, retains a fair edge and is extremely tough.

All I recall of X15TN was that it held an edge a little better than H1 but was not as corrosion resistant, meaning it showed rust during testing. Your best bet would be to look for some posts by Sal Glesser of Spyderco, when H1 was first coming out it was competing with X15TN and there were quite a few posts made describing the two steels. I don't have search access so I can't point you to the exact thread but try using the BF Google search.

My concern would be the omega springs and Axis mechanism corroding. I have no concerns about the blade itself.

In the desert?...Where do u live...What kind of knife does one carry IN the desert for EDC?

Phoenix, AZ
Dont really know what ya mean by that, but I pretty much carry whatever I want :p
I dont really have any rust issues here as the humidity is never very high and my knives dont usually get too wet.
