So i just bought a benchmade griptilian a couple days ago. I like the knive and for $100 i think it was a good purchase. However i purchased the half serrated drop point. Everywhere im looking i hear people saying that half serrated knives are pointless and im starting to feel like a dumbass for purchasing one.
Should i have gotten the griptilian in plain drop point or maybe a even the tanto version?

Everyone's take is different, but here is how I look at things. A knife is only a tool, and that tool should suit your needs. If you cut lots of boxes, rope, etc, serrations are great. If you have more of a need for slicing, than maybe a plain edge is better. Then again, I have fully serrated knives and partials that slice just fine. I used to hate serrations, but find them quite useful in may situations. That being said, I think a PE looks much cleaner and nicer. So I have plain edge, partial serrated and fully serrated. Different tools for different jobs, and they all excel at their intended jobs.

Short story long, if you tool meets your needs, you made a wise decision. The Grip is a great knife, good choice. The mini is one of my favorite EDC knives.

Forgot to respond to the tanto question.. I have a few tanto's, but for an EDC I prefer something with belly. On the flip side, I carry a wharncliffe blade quite often.

First off: don't get the tanto version. You're (probably) not going to be stabbing much and the drop point will most likely be better suited to your needs.

My take on the serrations is that you should either get a fully serrated knife or a plain edge. A half serrated edge is just half-assing two things at once. Never half-ass two things. Whole-ass one thing.

I can't really improve upon Hawk45's response, but...
Yes, if you conducted a random poll of bladeforums.com members, you'd probably find 8.97 out of 10 prefer plain edges over partially-serrated ones--but don't let that sway you. My first real knife was a PS Benchmade 940, before I knew anything about knives. It's not the exact same shape as the Griptilian, but I used the hell out of it and never once lamented the absence of a plain edge.

As for the tanto, since you said

I just dont see myself carrying a tanto. It looks like something some teenage boy who thinks hes a navy seal would carry.

I think you definitely should get one.

As for the serrations, you clearly couldn't be bothered to do any research before you bought

Please post a price and picture so i dont have to google it and stuff.

...and now you, apparently, found the gazillion threads here about serrations.

And now you cant figure out whether you made the right or wrong decision.

I will tell you. And you want have to Google it or anything.

Serrations are crap. Fail. Feel like a dumbass.

There you go.

Has nothing to do with THIS thread please leave

I Really dislike the 553 tanto. Want a great tanto get a BM Stryker. The 553 blade is not really good at doing any cutting job well IMO. Slicing or stabbing. the Stryker is an excellent knife though. As for serrations. I love them when I have to do alot of "junk" cutting. I would rather have a knife with serrations that can cut up a bunch of tough/rough "junk" easily without worry of ruining the edge on one of my plain edge blades or the PE part on the PS knife. Serrations have their purpose. Up to you if you prefer them or not though. BM 551 is a good knife.

My biggest gripe with serrations is they are a pain to sharpen. Once they are sharp, I find myself wanting to use a plain edge all the time. I agree with the people that say, full plain or full serrated. From what I know, serrated is great for hacking at things all day and not having to worry about it being razor sharp. For everything else plain edges are better. However, it comes to preference. Some people like the half and half so that they can preserve the plain edge for delicate work and just beat on the serrated edges when cutting cardboard, tape etc. Obviously some people like the half serrated because there still making them and if they didn't sell, the big knife companies would not offer them much. That being said, spyderco does not offer many serrated versions of there knives outside the salt series.

$100 for a griptilian. Makes me cry.

You're not a dumb ass. I had a Grip that partially serrated for my first good knife. It was a great knife, and I learned to sharpen with it, and what I would really be using a knife for. One thing it excelled at was cutting those bands around cardboard boxes and rope. Some will say a properly sharpened knife will do the same, but in my experience the serrated edge has its benefits.

One thing for sure, you will have an opinion on serrations based on experience. You may find you like them. Take care.

Hey! The guy is obviously a newbie. We all were once. Cut him some slack. We want to promote the forum not have people think a bunch of knife snubs hang out here.

Indeed. And we spent a great deal of time helping him do the legwork on a very, very specific shape of knife blade he was looking for. Which he picked out and bought.

Frustrating that now he is having second thoughts. Oh well. C'est la vie.

It's all good ;)

If serrations are useful to you or if you just like them, keep it. You shouldn't give a damn about others' opinions on them.

Promoting the forum is well and good. No need to tell lies to accomplish that.

Besides, those knife snobs have a lot of useful information on offer. :p

I like the serrations i feel theyll come in handy if i need to cut something that a knife wasnt really meant to cut. I like the look of it over the plain edge as well.

In that case, ignore the opinions of the others. :)

You see, the whole point of it all is to acquire things that you like that will work for the tasks you intend to do.

As Richard Feynman said, "What Do You Care What Other People Think?"
