I also prefer the 550/555 versions. The hole opener is my first choice for a manual opener and I prefer the modified sheepsfoot blade profile of the 550 & 555. I also really like the hollow ground blades on the 154CM & N690 Grips, but I notice that I tend to stick with the 20CV flat-sabre ground models.
I own a 550HG. I chose it because I wanted the thumb-hole. Thumb-studs aren't a deal-breaker for me but given a choice, I tend to go for a thumb-hole. It's just easier and more comfortable for me.
I won’t buy a thumbhole Benchmade as they look like Spyderco ripoffs/wannabes to me. I have no idea about the licensing side of things and don’t really care.
Not that I don’t love Benchmades (own 4 and have one being delivered today), but I think Spyderco when I see that round hole.
Just a personal thing.
I do prefer the studs and Axis lock to any Spydiehole and Spyderco lock though...
I really like the 550 blade shape so it's a hole or nothing. If they made that blade profile with a thumbstud I'd be pretty happy. I like both methods of opening so it comes down to the rest of the blade....
