Is It A Good Knife?
Worth My Time?
I've Got An Offer For A Used One In A Trade.
For My Kershaw JYD #1720 In Like New Condition.
Me Being Mainly Into Kershaws, But Wanting My First Benchmade, I Am Wondering If It's Worth It, He Offered Up A Casio Forester Watch As Well. And Really, I'm Torn, I'm More Of A Collector Than A User, And I Just Don't Know What To Do. I Love My Kershaw, But Like I Said, I Want My First Benchmade, But I Want It To Be A Decent One, And I Just Don't Know If It's Worth It.
So I'm Asking For Opinions.
Please Help Me Out.

I carried a 556? for a good while. I loved it. That was before my Spyderco infatuation started. I thought the scales felt a little ''cheap'',
but I dug everything else.

It looks like your JYD 1720 is a discontinued model. In other words, if you give it up and have regrets, you might never get one back in the mint condition your current knife is in. So if it has sentimental value of any kind, I personally wouldn't trade it for a used Mini Grip that I could get from about anywhere.

In general, though, a Mini Grip is a good intro to Benchmade and the AXIS lock. So maybe invest in one from another source without giving up your JYD at some point?

its a very well made nice knife, the only complaint i ever have with them is the plastic, if it was g10 it would be one of my favorites

i just bought myself a full-sized griptilian for my birthday as my first "nice" knife, and i have to say i'm really pleased with it. i agree that the plastic handle feels a bit on the cheap side, but so far that's been a non-issue.

The mini Grip isn't bad, but I feel there are better options from in that size and price range. For Benchmade, I like the feel of the mini Presidio Ultra over the mini Grip. Some may argue the mini Grip has better steel, however.

Thanks For All Of The Opinions! I Decided Not To Do The Trade Unless It Was For Something I Know Is Really Good, And That I Will Love Equally To My JYD. Thank You Guys, I Will Check Out The Mini Presidio.

I prefer the mini to the full size grip. Good call on not trading your JYD, as Gadfly said, you can pick up a grip damn near anywhere :D

I like the mini grip because it's compact and utilitarian along with the axis lock. The handles don't bother me at all, I feel they are fairly tough and durable. I'm not sure I'd trade the Kershaw either, but the mini grip is one of my favorites.

I had quite a few Spydercos until I bought my first Benchmade (a 555 Mini Grip). Since then I have aquired over thirty Axis Lock Benchmades, but just a couple more Spydercos.

The Mini Griptilian is a great first Benchmade. I prefer the 556 and 558 to the 555/555-HG.

imo its a good trade, my fiance loves her mini grip and though many say the handles feel cheap... the knife weighs only 2.56oz!!!
the mini grip has been a preferred edc amongst numerous members here on the board. if youre looking for something youll actually use instead of collecting... go ahead and trade the jyd.

I love mine. It is a 556 that I got in a trade about a year and a half ago, and I have been EDCing it steadily ever since. It is not pretty, just a practical, well-made tool.

The mini grip 556 is an amazing knife, one of my all time favorite edc blades, they make good use of the blade length, better than the Delica which is another one of my favorites, and the grip size is just right. What i don't like is some of the areas on the handle were made to aggressive and grip too much and sort of tears at your pocket, and i don't like the placement of the lanyard hole, other than that it was one of my best edc blades, my small sebenza 21 kicked it out of the pocket though.

It's a decent knife, it was my first Benchmade, but what got me hooked on Benchmade was the 940, since you seem to be getting a decent deal, it may be worth it to get it, but a knife that is about the same price, that I like allot more is the Spyderco Caly 3. Just my 2 cents

If you're going to get a grip, I personally would go for the ritter mini-grip. I like the blade profile and S30V steel, although it's not super easy to sharpen. But the griptilian series is one of Benchmade's best. You may want to have some custom scales made for it, but a griptilian with custom CF or G10 scales is a hard knife to beat.
