Hello All. I was putting AC in my home and ran in to some problems, had to borrow some tools from my father in law. I went to his shed looking for some stuff and came across an old Benchmade that looked like it had been treated very poorly.

After asking the forum I was informed this is a Benchmade Mini Rukus and was actually a very nice blade originally. I decided to surprise my father in law and give this knife a rejuvenation. So the project began.

The opposite show side has some serious marring and there was paint and gunk all inside the action and internals. The knife barely opened and the blade was pitted. I got an Amazon package and tried to open it but the edge was so gone that it couldn't even cut the box tape. I imagine it had been used on concrete or something because the edge was rolled and the tip blunt. There was a decent amount of rust as well as you can see. I did a decent quick once over and cleaned a lot of the paint out, scraped some of the rust off the blade. i hit it with Shotgun bore cleaner and then some breakfree CLP. put in a little elbow grease with a shop rag and then it became this:

So my amazing wife and I just had a beautiful baby boy 3 weeks ago, she has been on Maternity leave and developed this addiction to trash television. I have never been much on TV to begin with but I hate trash TV especially. Long story short she was watching Ru Paul's drag race and then Dr Pimple popper. I quickly decided to dive deeper in to my project.

Complete disassemble down to the frame, soaked everything in Boiling hot water with dish soap. I drained out some very disgusting dirty water and dried it all off and started in on the rust. I hit the blade with 400 grit sandpaper and once all the rust was gone I got all the marring down to a soft smooth blade again, even getting a semi satin look going on.

Next I worked on the micarta, using the 400 grit to get all the top layer of oil and paint off. It is much better but not quite where I want it to be. Anyone have any advice on getting oil out of micarta? It looks like motor oil.

Last and most importantly I broke out the stones and started on the reprofile of the blade. I started with 600 then moved to 1000, 3000 and finally 8000... and of course a strop for good measure. the point was broken off so I used the 400 to try and add an edge to the top of the blade, the kind of bayonet grind going on.

You can see from the pictures that I got a decent cutting edge and the blade is sharp to the end of the blade but I didn't quite get a point that I wanted. I may hit the top and just flat grind it to get that point or I can always work on that false edge on top and just make a point too. Not quite sure yet but any input is greatly appreciated. Here she is now, please let me know what you think of the edge, I know I'm not a sharpening guru so I can take come criticism.

Still some bad marring on the blade but it's a lot better than it was. Maybe a wheel and some polishing compound can get deep enough to knock it all down.

Meal with the knife now as I write this:

Still need to work on this micarta and I could use a pocket clip:

I wouldn't give it back to whoever abused it so badly. I think from where it came from it looks great. I would contact Benchmade and see if they will send you a pocket clip(they usually will fr free). That knife sure earned the character it has now.

Nice effort to save a Hall of Fame knife. I think you can get the oil off the micarta scales with hot soap and water. They usually darken with age as hand oil sinks in.

I wouldn't sharpen the swedge. It wouldn't be hard to cut yourself pulling it out of your pocket. If it were me, I'd go with a guided system to give the edge an even angle and bring that tip back into shape.

The blade scarring will be tough. Maybe you could take off the thumb studs and sand it down more easily.

For sharpening, I'd start with 100-grit diamonds to reset the edge and tip.

But I really like what you're doing. I have EDC'd a 610 Rukus for years. It's a great knife.

Thanks good info, I like the idea of removing the thumb studs, that's the one thing I didn't try.

Micarta was soaked in boiling hot water and dish soap, still had to sand it before it got to this point. I like unbuffed micarta so I was trying to get that look going. I think tomorrow I'm going to take the blade out and try removing the thumbstud. I think I'll try and hit that tip again with the stones and free hand it out. I don't have the wicked edge

I bought that model for myself as a birthday present years ago. It's a great knife. Sounds like a fun project. Please keep us updated.

Ok here is a few options:
1.Contact benchmade they will replace it for a small fee if they have any extra on hand laying around and clean it up for you.

2. A.If your a diy guy then remove the blade from the knife

B.Put it in a vice or clamp it or just use a set of vise grips to hold it.

C.Start with 200 grit and sand continuously in the same direction. Until you cant see your other scratches.

D. Repeat last step with 400 grit then 600 I usually stop at 600 my self because it's a good satin look hides scratches well

E. (Optional) buy a Magic/ super eraser and do the final sanding with it and make sure your going same contious direction. I have seen people just use this for the finish and nothing else but yours look deep it just depends on how much work you wanna put in.

F. If your going to sharpen it freehand sharpen it and just focus on the tip for a while and dont be afraid to shape/sharpen the top swedge some to bring back the point.
***It all depends on how good you want to make it look. If your new to this and wanting to get into the hobby think about buying a guided system cheap Lanskey or dmt makes a good guided system that clamps on the blade and it let's you put consistant edges on it.

G. Call benchmade or email and get them to send you a couple of clips out try a bugout clip and maybe a deep carry and the standard arrow clip.

H. You can sand the micarta and get it to lighten up. Or citric strip. As another poster said earlier.

I just used DLT because they are a forum sponsor and have always done me right. You can get most of the stuff other places if your looking to do it on a budget.

So I just hit it again with some more 400 grit and got the micarta to a good level, broke down and oiled it too. I gave up on the natural micarta look, the dark oiled micarta matches the G10 "blackwood" better too. I'll try and find some Citristrip, I have a lot of micarta so it sounds useful to have around.

I sent an email to Benchmade about a new blade before I started this adventure but we will see where that goes. I forgot to ask for a clip and screws too, if thye email back I hope I remember.

Craziest part about it this knife has a perfect action now, I polished the axis lock and where it engages the blade, washed and oil the PB washers and now it fires open like it's on bearings and drops shut. No blade play at all after re assembling and adjusting the pivot. I have a whole new respect for the BM line up after this.

I like the idea of starting with 200 grit and then 400 and I'll have to find some 600. In Retrospect this might have been something for REK to reblade for me. Oh well.

Here it is currently, I'll post a pic tmrw after I free hand the tip. Wish me luck haha.

Thanks Mods for moving the post, I didn't know this forum existed.

I think I figured out this blade got so marred, it looks like this blade was used to jimmy a door(s). You can see the deep striations are only on oneside of the blade where the door jams lock engages. it appears to have been jammed in to a door to get the lock to open like a credit card jimmy.

My FIL had a minivan that was stolen by a tweeker a few years back and when the police found it there was all kinds of stolen stuff in the back, bikes, tools, clothing. I helped him pick up the van from the impound and tried to convince him it wasn't worth paying the fee but he paid it anyways. Perhaps this came from that, perhaps it has another story. I don't know. He claims to not know anything about this knife though and isn't the kind of guy who carries a pocket knife so who knows.

Excellent job bringing it back to life!! I believe the micarta section is removable/replaceable. Also a good brushing with a wire brush would get down in all those tight spots n buff it up!!
good luck with the rest of your endeavor and keep the updates coming!!! Thanx for sharing!!

To remove the oil/grease from the G10 & Micarta scales: Remove the scales from the knife and wash using Dawn dish washing detergent, a hand brush & water.
Lather, rinse, repeat, lather, rinse, repeat....let air dry.

I would definetly see if you can get the thumb studs off and do the hand sanding route. Just my 2¢ tho.
I would say send it to me and I’ll hand sand it for you, but you look like your having too much fun doing it yourself lol.

Very nice restoration. I have #160, first production run and my first knife with S30V. Benchmade's treatment of that steel is terrific -- takes a very fine edge very easily.

Well done! Ive had some success using the mexican soap called "Zote". its gotten stains out of many handle materials including white g10 and micarta.

Your father in law will be a happy man or get a quizzical look like a tool man unsure of the tool gifted. Certainly family ties will be more tightly bound, and maybe some history will emerge. Great find, fun project, good heart. thx 4 sharg

Thank you sir, I will definitely keep trying. for now the oiled micarta and G10 are looking decent, well decent enough considering.

Benchmade got back to me, it's been a crazy week and with all this shutdown stuff. I've been working pretty crazy hours so I haven't been able to remove the studs and spend the time i need to hand sand it. I did however get an email from Benchmade:

I kind of like the blade the way it is now though, mostly because I put the edge on it and it has a cool story. It would be nice to have a brand new blade though and be able to carry this more. decisions decisions.

Haha, ya I am having fun but I can get a new blade for $35... I think I may keep the current blade and just sand it down. it's got a lot of memories in that blade and it's kind of cool to keep it. I only wish some of them were my memories, but nonetheless it's seen some stuff and bringing it back to life is really cool to me.
