Benchmade Opened Box

Well you COULD consider yourself blessed for being able to burn a couple of hundred bucks on a luxury item in these times.

I would, at any rate.

But you do you, friend. Hope you find satisfaction.

I HATE this response. Maybe this person busted their ass and saved for that knife. Anyone who buys a knife from a dealer, unless stated otherwise, should expect and receive a NEW knife. Doesnt matter how lucky or blessed someone thinks you should be, you should be happy with your purchase period. Personally I'd check for ANY other flaws and make sure it's not a fake like someone mentioned and if all checks out then keep it. It being fake would be my main concern. This is also why whenever I recieve a knife I film myself opening the package. Just in case the dealer gives you $*** about it you have video proof of you opening it for the first time so they can't claim you are the one trying to pull a fast one on them.

I HATE this response.

Wow, HATE ??

Simply said the poster COULD feel such... just for a bit of perspective maybe. Perspective is good.

Also stated that I hoped they find satisfaction. Was sincere about that one as well.

I guess the old T-Shirt saying is true then... "Haters gonna Hate".

Carry on.

Yes I hated your response. Telling someone they should be grateful because they could spend that money on a knife I thought was a rude response. Trying to make someone feel bad for being picky about something they spent their hard earned money on i thought was a bad response. You even went as far as to say thats what I would do as if your better than them because you'd feel fortunate to at least be able to spend that amount of money. It came off as a high and mighty response and they should just be grateful and accept what they got...even if it wasn't exactly what they were expecting...

But you do you lol...yup

There is always one ...but actually this was a gift for a good friend. I hope you will one day be as blessed and not be judged as you so eloquently did.

You see some (like our friend) would rather take that couple hundred dollars and hand it to someone they feel is more deserving missing the complete concept of earning... No doubt this person has no understanding of what took place when I decided to spend that couple hundred bucks on this luxury item. Just to name a few:

1. Helped keep the lights on in a small business.
2. Helped employees of that small business by helping keep them employed with good healthcare benefits.
3. Helped Benchmade and their employees.
4. Helped the Steel company and other suppliers ETC....

But back on track...

If it's just fingerprints and the card not under the clip then wipe it down and put the card back. Yea it was opened, but it would be more of a hassle returning and waiting on a new one. If it truly bothers to that much cuz it's a gift, or it scratched and used I'd say reach out to the dealer and ask for a return.

I don’t see anything wrong with waiting a product as described (assuming the product description didn't mention it).

Personally if I didn't see anything permanently wrong with it I'd keep it and wrap it up.

When I buy a knife as a gift for someone I always give it a thorough inspection. I wouldn't want to give them a defective or damaged knife.

I'd be concerned that if I gave someone a knife without inspecting it and it turned out to be defective, it might end up sitting in a drawer because the recipient either didn't want to tell me my gift was defective, or because they didn't want to hassle with returning it themselves.

An open box wouldn't bother me on a gift knife because I'd be opening it anyways.

Good on you!

But your mischaracterization of my supposed actions notwithstanding (gifting money and missing the concept of earning), I saw your initial post as disgruntled with what happened. But my perception of it was 1) You ordered an expensive knife... 2) You received an expensive knife.

These are two things that folks increasingly can't do right now, due to circumstances that are no fault of their own.

And so thereby hopefully making you less disgruntled for this occurrence, and perhaps a bit more grateful for it.

But I guess "there's always one" of my kind out there, trying to get folks to look at the bright side.

My apologies if you feel judged. But I hope you get satisfaction in this matter at any rate.

As an aside, I've given away literally HUNDREDS of knives in my 20-ish years in this hobby. Never gave a box with it, and it never mattered. :)

I really appreciate the responses, it seems the general consensus is speak with the merchant to gain an understanding as to why the item arrived in a less than stellar conditon then move on down the road. Maybe there is a legitament reason why Knife Works sent me an open box item a couple days before Christmas. We shall see...once I dicuss with their customer service representive I will report back.

Sigh... and I suppose you are still missing the point. 1. I paid for a NEW expensive knife (yup) 2. I received a knife that was at the least NOT new and at the worst a clone. Disgruntled ehhh maybe a bit put off ... because once again I paid for a new knife and CLEARLY did not get a new knife. Shame on me for thinking I should receive what was in the description?? LOL I suppose

M Marine53 LOL indeed! I suppose the gist of where I wanted to be in this thread can be summed up and left alone...

1. Feel blessed you can do this. I know I do... but I agree that you don't have to....

2. The knife is probably just fine, and if you gift it to a good friend, your good friend is gonna appreciate the hell out of it.... and

3. I hope you find satisfaction in this enterprise.

Your friend is lucky to have friends like you. Enjoy the rest of the year!

I think we have made some progression!

Opened box, fingerprints, imperfect position in bag and a piece of paper in the wrong place is not a "used" knife.

This should have been the 1st and only necessary answer.

Fabulous answer .... but I think you missed the question, what would you do? Nothing? You don't mind open boxes when you buy something that is supposed to be new? Now if they would have asked me would I mind an open box as the only one they have left is a display item then yea I can respect that and would have politely declined but you see that is my dilemma... they offered me no choice. Not that it matters but I purchased two 940-2 Osbornes one was opened and one was not both were to be gifts and I would have preferred non-opened items.

If it were me: I would've put the axis card and pouch back where they belong and gifted it as intended as long as nothing was wrong with it.

I like plums. Especially black plums. Stone fruit in general really. I'll eat 2 or 3 a day while they're in season. EAT them. Put them in my mouth and swallow them... They've probably all been handled by someone else. I can deal with a solid object also having been handled by someone else before landing in my possession.

That's just my perspective though. I understand yours too. As long as your interactions with the dealer are rational and respectful I don't think there's a wrong answer here.

Is it damaged in any way? I'm not sure I understand the problem. Someone touched it? Why would you return a perfectly good knife?

I could only tell that it was handled and have no idea if its a clone or not ... I have not seen or handled clones so I honestly have no idea. The knife could have been returned and switched with a clone something that was mentioned but it seems like that would have been caught by the store or ... they just didn't bother checking. This could have been a display item and they just packed it up when I ordered two. The problem is, I was not asked if an opened box on a 180.00 knife was ok as I can tell you that I have been asked that very same question many times. Does it bother me "someone touched it" absolutely not .... but if it was returned and had it been lets say taken apart as many people do (whole other topic) the warranty is voided. Why would I return a perfectly good knife? Good Question, sorry to say I don't need nor want another Osborne in my small stash. At this point I would rather just return the knife and put the money on something else .... like another knife.
