Benchmade or Al Mar...

Go for the SERE 2000, if you're only going to choose one.
The axis lock is very strong, sure, but its operation relies on a couple thin, little, rust-prone springs that are encased within the handle. The possibility of them getting gunked up or rusting/breaking is way greater than the failure of the SERE's liner lock. I work outside, and near salt water, so I no longer use axis-lock Benchmades after having a couple springs break. The SERE will be much more reliable in the long run.

I am of the opposite opinion. I had a liner lock wear out and another fail during use and close. I can't fix a liner lock. On the other hand I had an omega spring break on a knife that I have flipped open and closed probably close to 20k times. 5 minutes later with a piece of MIG wire and I had a new spring that has been working perfect since then.

There have been maybe 50 people post on here about a broke omega spring out of (hundreds of?) Thousands of knives so the break rate is statistically about 0 percent.

I would much rather have an AXIS lock over a liner lock.

Benchmade also replaces them without a question asked in my experience.

Well to each his own I guess. I can't imagine what you would be doing to fail that beast of a liner lock on the SERE. Go for the auto SERE if the liner-lock is that big of an issue.

Rift!

I'm not a big fan of liner locks which the SERE has. I was going to order a Bone collector last night but the store is out. I have high expectations for it and think it will be great. The Benchmade 14205 is worth a look too.

I definately suggest you spring for that Bone Collector next time its in stock as I believe you will really like it. Its quite similar in size to the Rift but a bit heavier and thicker. After posting in here a few days back I went out to my local store and picked one up and I love it! I haven't put it down since. The opening hole is a really cool feature not found on many Benchmades and I really prefer it to thumb studs usually because they are so easy to manipulate with or without gloves on and with either hand. I've been talking this model up ever since I first handled it when it first came out. I'm starting to feel like you with your constant praising of the Rift! haha.

To the OP: It really doesn't matter which one you pick out of the ones you're looking at as either are some of the best production knifes on the market in my opinion. The SERE does not have any small moving parts which is always nice but as FlaMtnBkr stated the AXIS is VERY durable. I have been using various axis models for a couple years now and have never had a single problem with any of them.

I finally decided and now have a BM Presidio 520. I choose this model because for my hands it is more comfortable than the others and I actually like aluminum handles. If I needed the knife in cold or very hot climates, I wouldn't choose aluminum, but it works for my needs. I really like the knife so far, the handle fits my medium hands very well and because of the blasted and machined finish, it stays put in your hand very well. The blade shape and length are perfect for my general purpose needs and I suspect strong enough for most normal and some beyond normal needs. The edge has been ground surprisingly thin for Benchmade, it needs a good sharpening, which I will do shortly, but so far I am quite happy. The one note many should be aware of is that as others have said, it will chew up your pocket quickly. I don't care as the first thing I did was take off the clip and carry it in a belt pouch.
