Benchmade or Spydie...

I need help on which one to get. There is a benchmade folder at the local Oshmans although I'm not sure what kind it is. It's about 45.00:eek: . I plan to spend less than 50.00. Then, there is a Spydie Endura or a Delica. I'm not sure they sell them there though. A lot of people think Spydies are the best kind of knife there is. Any info on why? Anyway, I'm looking for a knife that's big(width). Does anyone have pics of the Spydies I mentioned in their hand? I'm looking for a good tactical knife, not a small pocket knife. Thanks in advance.

that feels right in your hand. Both companies turn out top notch folders. You'd be hard prseed to go wrong with either.

Diamond CutII :

I'm generally a Spydie nut myself,
but also have a 556 "mini" Griptillian PE. If you're lookig to
spend under $50, might I recommend a friend? She's a Law Enforcement dealer, but sells to forumite(s).
Her name is GlassHartt ( Linda ) and
she has the Endura ($45) and Delica
($40) plus USPS shipping, E-mail her: GlassHartt@aol.com

And tell'er Al Treat sent ya'1

BTW : She also has models like the Renegade ($50) & Native ($47) if they're your forte.

OBTW : Happy Thanksgiving!!!;)

AET ;) ( ATE on the Spyderco.com "home" forum ;))

They are both good companies, but between the Endura/Delica and the Griptilian, I chose the Griptilian...

It really comes down to what you want more: the VG-10 steel or the AXIS lock...

Personally, I'd vote for the spyderco at that price range. There are some really nice Benchmade's too, but I think they are all at a higher price. BM competes with Spyderco pretty well at the medium and higher ends, but not so well under $50. IMHO of course. YMMV

If it is selling for 45 dollars the BM is most likely an Ascent model. Not a bad knife, but not a real stunner either.

While the Delica is a good knife as well, significantly superior knives can be had for only a few tiny dollars more.

If I only had fifty dollars to spend on a knife I would do something to earn, find, or save ten bucks and go buy a Griptilian. It has the Endura/Delica beat in most major categories.

Handle - Unlined flat nylon vs. Steel lined contoured nylon. The Griptilian is stronger and much more comfortable and secure in actual use, albeit at a slight width and weight penalty. The steel liners add rigidity and prevent that cheezy hollow feeling that you would otherwise get from unlined FRN.

Lock - Lockback vs. Axis lock. No contest, the axis lock is stronger, more reliable, smoother, more convenient, and much better at adjusting for wear. I have never seen an Axis lock knife with discernable blade play after months of use, lockbacks frequently have significant blade play even when new.

Blade - Thin and pointy vs. Other. I have seen too many Delicas with the last section of the blade broken off to get one myself. The extremely thin point is good for penetrating, but just doesn't have enough support to be really durable. The shape of the 555 and 556 are still excellent performers, but they have more steel at the tip for additional strength.

Frankly, I would be willing to pay the extra ten bucks for just the steel liners or the Axis lock. Getting both makes this an easy choice as far as I'm concerned.

Choosing between SPYDERCO Delica or Endura and suitably sized BENCHMADE Accents I would go with Spydies. I like opening hole, I like VG-10 steel, their handles are more comfortable for me than BM Accent ones and generally SPYDERCO lightweights appeal to me better.

However adding only about $10 you can enter qualitatively another category – heavy-duty knife instead of lightweight one. Fishbulb explained the matter excellently, here is nothing to add.
If you want tactical or heavy-duty piece – definitely go with Griptilian!

Ford or Chevy? ;)

Yeah, but which one is getting pi$$ed on?:D Maybe I'd have to see the knives for myself and choose. The griptillan's blade doesn't seem like a knife for self defense(to me). Thanks for all the input. Much appreciated.

Benchmade is a tougher knife spydies are nice but for a real brut go with the benchmade. they only use super steels and none of this FRN handle stuff. i like the style of a spydie but benchmade is my EDC.

I prefer Benchmade between the two brands. That being said, I have about 10 Spydercos, And allot of my EDCs are drawn from that pool. If it was between an BM Accent and a Spydie Endura II, I would go with the Endura, But add a few bucks to your budget and I would choose allot of diffrent Benchmade Models

While I do think that he should go for a Benchmade, I disagree with your arguments. The steel on the new Spydercos (VG-10) is better than on the Benchmades in this price range (440C and ATS-34) and Benchmade uses zxytel on their cheaper models, just like Spyderco.

It all comes down to VG-10 versus AXIS lock.

Spyderco does have VG-10 but that's all they have and they don't even useit on the majority of there knives...The Endura is AUS-6  and although benchmades grip maybe FRN handles I'm pretty sure that they had a liner. besides the axis lock is far superior.

BTW I think the ATS-34 was Replaced with 154CM on all the BMs

Actually the Endura is VG-10. So is the Delica, the Merlin, the Calypso Jr. ltwt, and others.
Is the Axis lock really superior? It depends on springs that can break. It's stronger than the lockback, but no more reliable, IMO. I've had several, and liked them all. After sending my 710HS back for a new spring, I'm not nearly as hyped on the Axis as I used to be. It also makes for a thicker, heavier knife, which is the opposite of what you (well, I) would want on small folders.
Buy a design that fits what you want it to do. That's all that matters.

add CRKT to the mix...
Same quality and price range, although I would even go as far as saying better price than both the Spydie and Benchmade.

You can't use the "not made here" arguement against CRKT as the Spydies aren't made here either.
