Well, all the time items like those sharpeners were used, tested or discussed, ended with the same conclusion, that they destroy a good edge.
How can i get a sharp edge, if the same time, i pull the edge through the "sharpeners blades" , the very edge runs over the cross between the two "sharpeners blades" ? They cut off the edge and leave a coarse saw.:barf:
This system is as old as bad!:thumbdn: Sorry to say this.
Benchmade was good to just atvertise them for "touching up" the edge. I can´t understand why they even advertise them.
I missed a single information on the rediedge site, of what the sharpners were made of. Old fashoined things were made with Karbide. Newer ones feature ceramics.
I guess the warmed up a fucked up system.:barf:
I i were in need of a field sharpener, to touch up the edge, i would took a small ceramic rod as coarse as i wish. There are plenty to get. Most steel grades are edge holding enough, that i usually don´t have to touch them up "in the field".
If it were for hunting, well a larger ceramic rod in the back pack might be more comfort and not too heavy.
Benchmade varies the edge angles from model to model. Most of the time the edges are ground to 30° included. The 710 was ground at 40° included, years ago, don´t know, if that has changed.
My recommendation is:
Safe the edge and look out for something like this:
