Benchmade QC

Benchmade makes great knives, but most of them are IMO not a very good value relative to years past and relative to many other makers of great knives. As a general rule, my BMs have had a good fit and finish for a production knife. I say for a production knife because I think almost every production knife I have owned except the ZT0777 (which technically isn't a production knife) had some flaws and some areas in QA/QC where it isn't 100%. But that's going to be with every production model. Some BMs have left the factory in a condition they never should have. While not acceptable, this happens time to time with all makers of production knives, and generally this is more an issue of fit and finish than it is functional design. (If the #1 trait one wants is a ridiculous fit and finish, the Sebenza is the knife for them!)

I think the Griptilian line is one of the coolest knives Benchmade has ever made. If you can get them at a reasonable price, it's a great knife to own. If you are stuck paying full retail, it may still be a good knife to own, but it's worth looking at competition such as the Kershaw Blur. Kershaw currently has an ELMAX Blur set to come out for less money than the Griptilian with the base 154CM steel...which ELMAX craps all over.

Just gave my full-size Rittergrip to my grandson: it was my EDC for ten years with no problems whatsoever. Replaced it w/ an Osborne 943; super lightweight,
great lockup and perfectly centered blade. Ten years from now it will be his too.... BM is #1 w/ me.

Good knife but I recomend buying it in person so you can inspect first and avoid a lemon. I own several Benchmades and like them but their QC is not so good. Uneven main grinds, edge bevels and blade centering issues have been common for me.

Roll the dice, I have had 2 dull (butter knife) griptilians and one m4 griptilian where the blade rubbed against the liner and kept scraping the coating. The 2 dull griptilians functioned decently though. I heard benchmade intentionally don't sharpen their blades so you can profile them yourself, but even if this is true who the hell wants to do that.....I am buying an expensive CUTTTING tool for CUTTING. Once the blade starts getting dull and I start sharpening it, this is when I will slowly reprofile my blade over time. Anywho I will not buy a benchmade again, Benchmades the house and the house always wins.

I only have 1 BM currently, a 585 mini barrage. Fit and finish is ok, the scales had some excess material that was easily sanded down. My biggest issue was the edge. It came with ridiculously different angles on each side. I got it a bit better, but I'll be re-centering the edge over the next several sharpenings. It's now my favorite EDC. That being said, if I had had to pay for it (it was a gift), I probably wouldn't have bought it.

I am considering my first Benchmade, the 586 mini barrage with M390 steel to replace my current EDC blade. I really want to try this knife but threads like this one make me nervous about buying one and also I can't seem to find any deals on it so not sure it is worth $187 for it. I think that is kinda high price when I compare the $$$ to the PM2 sprints that I get for only $149 like the cts-204p one.

The reason I am looking at this Benchmade is because the blade is about 3 inches, which is what we are allowed to carry and really wanna try that steel.

Any comments on this model would be appreciated, whether good or bad review! Also, what kind of warranty does Benchmade have?

Thanks in advance for the comments/reviews on this one! :)

P.S. If anyone know of a similiar model with the same steel or close that may be cheaper, then please let me know! Also let me know if you can get this model for less! :)

Looking over my collection the other day I realized I have kept more of my Benchmade knives than anything else. Some people are going to complain about centering, tiny wiggle in the lockup, etc. when all it takes is 30 seconds with a torx to address most of the issues. If you go through enough knives, you will always run into issues be they production or custom. You will be fine with Benchmade - they make great knives and will take care of you. The Griptilian is a hall of fame level design for a reason.

Yep.

I swear i'm not following you...

Benchmade has the best warranty in the biz. Anything with m390 steel is going to be expensive right now. It's a highly sought after super steel.

I've never had a problem with benchmade knives. Quality has always been a+. I recently bought a mini grip with the Spydie hole. Love it.

586 is an excellent production knife with M390. It has AXIS assist that would allow you to deploy quickly. If you don't like the fit and finish, or needs re-sharpening, you can always send it to Benchmade for repair. As long as you don't take it apart (if you do, BKC may charge you nominal "repair fee") they fill fix it for you.

If you don't mind 154cm (BM 585) is less expensive alternative. My wife carries that when she keeps it in the pouch while jogging.

I've had problems with every company I've purchased knives from. I had a brand new Sebenza that needed to be sent to CRK, a bunch of Benchmade knives, a few Spydercos, and most recently a ZT that needed to be sent in. No knife company will be 100%. But out of all the knives I've bought, I've had more issues with my Benchmade but followed closely by Spyderco. The good thing is that these companies have great CS and warranties, and they will usually take care of you.
