Benchmade quality still hit and miss?

From: Ivan8883@aol.com 6-10-99 953PM EDT For what its worth, the only Benchmade I have ever owned is the 7500 auto which I picked up not to long ago on Blade forum. It is a well made auto in my opinion. Ivan

James,

Thanks for explaining. I was thinking from a practical standpoint. Sort of how fantasy knives are made of cheap steel, but they don't need to be made of expensive steel since they just hang on a wall. Like I said before, I think Benchmade could have their knives a little sharper, but I think for the general public, their knives seem sharp enough. It's just that us knife people like to be able to split hairs with our knives!

Benchmade is not alone...I remember whenever my father would get a new pocket or kitchen knife, the first thing he would do is to sharpen it to his liking. But this was before all the high quality knives became popular.

Thanks for the tip.

I think I will check all of them out over the weekend if I get a chance. Man, it's going to take a while, though!

James ...

I will go to the BM forum and post this question you put in my head. THANKS, I never really gave that a thought, but it is something that needs to be answered

Is the QC of Benchmade really like that??
I have to consider myself very lucky.
I only have one BM, a Mini-Stryker, bought through mail order, and its quality, fit and finish is absolutely perfect. The action is very smooth, the liner-lock is positive, the blade is perfectly centered in the handle, the handles have perfect bevels...Only gripe is that the ATS-34, the way BM heat treats it, does not seem to get so very very sharp as some other knives I have.

I've bought many Benchmades over the years: AFCK, AFO, Nimravus, Ascent, etc. All have been excellent! Great fit and finish, superb operation, and all were "sharp" as can be (and I have sharpened knives for meat cutters before!). Some were mail ordered, one bought in a blister pak in a military PX, and most were bought at the Cuttlery Shoppe. Maybe Jeff Loffer checks his knives out before he sells them because I've never gotten a lemon from him. Maybe I'm just lucky. However, this thread will make me look from now on, as we should for any manufacturer.

Hmmmm....as always it disturbs me when people have a bad Benchmade experience. However if anyone wants to get rid of those NIB Benchmades, my collection will always have room

Just let me know

All of God's Critters may have knives, but most of them are stamped with the name BENCHMADE

Sorry to hear so many bad experiences with Benchmade!! I personally just recieved an M2 AFCK through the Knife Center. I ordered it online. It was shaving sharp out of the box, had no flaws in the finish, and none of the grinds were off! Believe it or not, I once owned an L-UDT from Microtech with an uneven grind on the blade! See, I guess everyone has products which may be off now and then, some more so than others I guess.
