I received a BNIB Benchmade 710BKD2 in the mail on Saturday.. After opening and closing it ~50 times, it started to rattle. Is this how all BM Axis Lock folding knives are?

I'm own Striders so this rattling occurrence is very annoying.

I only own one benchmade, but there is not any rattling present. Does it rattle when it's open? Closed? Is it the handle, blade, lock? Some more details might help.

I have had five Benchmades all with the Axis Lock and none of them have rattled. They have very good customer service, give them a call and I am sure they will make it right.

None of my benchmades have any rattle what so ever. More details and/or pics might help, but in the end, if it bothers you you should send it in to bench made and have it fixed up, benchmade's warranty service is among the best in the business.

ps-Strider isn't the best example of a knife without rattle...;) the common vertical blade play on the old style lock face is about as annoying as it gets...

My 710 and 950 both got more quiet and smooth as I used them more.

I've also owned two Benchmade Rifts, and haven't felt or heard a rattle when it is opened or closed. I don't tend to whack the hell out of my folders, but I do work with all my knives. I've owned both for about 6 months without any issues. I actually went and checked my knives out when I read this post. Maybe you should call up Benchmade and see what they can do. They usually have pretty good customer service.

I only have a mini grip but it has no rattle and the axis lock is rock solid. To be honest, if you look at how the axis lock is put together, Im not sure what could actually "rattle" in it.

My 710 was rock solid for about 2 years of hard use. Then one day the rattle started. The axis spring had broken. Most likely this is what you are hearing. Seems weird on a new knife though. Cant think of anything else in there that could rattle. Just send it back to Benchmade. They will fix it right up.

No issues here with rattling...... Although, I'll have to say their blade centering leaves something to be desired. I have inspected many Benchmade knives in the past two months, and the majority have had off-center blades. IMHO, a knife in their price range should have a perfectly centered blade. I know it may not bother some people, but it drives me nuts.

Sounds like you got a lemon. I'm not sure if I've just been lucky as far as Benchmade has been concerned, but all ofthe knives I have from them have been smooth, sharp, quiet and centered. I would contact BM and see what they recommend.

Send it back to Benchmade for replacement with a nasty letter. They should pay for shipping for this defective product. Inexcusable!

Sending a "nasty" letter is no way to receive good customer service.... I do not suggest this route.

It is blade wobble or something rattling? There isn't much to rattle in the AXIS lock so it may be a broken spring.

What is rattling? Did the pivot screw loosen a bit and is there any blade play by now?
Another possible source of rattling on the 710 is the stopping pin - it's pretty much loose in its holes. If it's rattling the wearing on the stopping pin should be distributed on pretty much the entire outline of the pin. You can try to use lock tight to secure the pin and prevent it from rattling (please do it with the knife blade open and pushing on the stopping pin or you'll have to do it all over again). But it shouldn't cause any problems besides being annoying.

I have only seen this once before.
I fixed this by adding grease to the axis cavities.
The curved section of the omega springs (not the ends/anchoring points) were not laying flat against the liners. Instead they were sitting up about half way between the scales and the liners. So, when the knife was shaken or jarred the springs would tap on the scales.
Everything functioned perfectly.
This was a knife that was sent to me for a rescale.
I have never had this issue with any other BM knives that I have ever owned; or any other BM knives I have worked on before or after this one, so far.

Maybe pivot screw backed out a bit?
I had to loctite my 940 screw in the desired position...

This would be my first guess, I've had this over time with a number of Benchmade knives. No big deal, a drop of blue or purple, tighten to the sweet spot and you're set.

As s_f asks, is there any blade play? That would be take us back to tightening the pivot, if not it would pretty much have to be the stop pin or a broken omega spring (which would be pretty obvious when you used the axis lock).

That was my first thought, too. A $10 torx wrench will save you a lot of headaches.

No rattle, no problems. Had mine for about a year or so now. Nice knife! I'd suggest sending it back if you're unsatisfied; I'm sure Benchmade will make it right!

Good luck, OP! :)

If you got if off the bay it might be a China clone. All of the knife manufactures are dealing with that now.
