Benchmade Quandry

I just went to a different knife store here locally and felt their Rift. It felt MUCH different the edges were not sharp at all on that one. Like was previously said "grippy but not sharp".

Between the grip and the 710, I like the 710 a good deal better, it feels much nicer in the hand IMO, and I love D2

Get the 14205!

It may not be as large, but it has a very sturdy blade, lowrider clip, and one of the best handle designs I've ever used.
I have a 710, and got tired of the re-curve and handle design in general. Some like it, I find the 14205 way better for close controlled cutting.

The Rift has also been whispering to me lately, very compelling design.

Between all of the above mentioned I love these three: 950-1, 710, 14205. I'm starting to carry the Rift a lot, the '205 next, and the 710. You can't go wrong with any of these, only difference in steel is the 710 is in D2, the others 154cm...I find D2 hard to sharpen if let go dull.

Terrible choice.

Not every knife fits every hand great and everyone has different tastes. He had the knife and either needed money or didn't like the design. It might be a terrible choice for you but obviously not for him or he wouldn't have done it. I don't think every person needs to have someone tell them their opinion about a knife they owned and decided to sell. So since this is about Benchmade, do you have a suggestion for a BM to add to the thread? Or just off the topic opinions?

My local 'pusher' still had new 610/615's... I can look again, if you like, F.M.B..

I know folks who have owned Sebbies - and sold them. As stated, some folks just go through knives - searching. Sadly, I acquire... for future comparison, of course... or is it wanton knife-gluttony? That said, I really have acquired some nice BM's this year (That just doesn't sound good...). I keep noticing what's in my pocket... not the Snody's... or the Skirmish or Rukus or their mini's... but that 710 D2. Quite a utilitarian knife - and very well made, too.

Re BM's and sharpening - like on a fixed angle device such as a Sharpmaker. The BM's are hand sharpened at the factory - their bevels vary - sometimes widely. Reshaping with the basic Sharpmaker - and D2, for example - will seem like a new career. Persevere - clean the 'files' often - and where the manual said 20 pulls, think a hundred plus - with several file cleanings interspersed, too. You'll get there.

PS While a Sebbie is still a dream here, word has it that Santa got me a deal on a Buck 172 Mayo TNT... hurry up Christmas morning!

I think the 710 is starting to become a "classic" kind of like the Buck 110. The 710 is a great EDC. I've got one of the older ones with ATS-34 steel. It is extremely comfortable to carry. Sometimes I forget its in my pocket. The G10 handle makes it feel solid and grips good. The blade is thin enough for good cutting and long enough to do jobs that shorter blades could'nt. The tip up clip is reversable for right or left hand.
Whenever a knife has the staying power,(close to 10 yrs ?),its got to be a great design. I think the Griptilian is also going to be in this catagory. The Grip I believe is about half the price as the 710. They both have that great axis lock. The Grip's blade is shorter and the handle is thicker. The biggest complaint is the plastic handle. It kinda makes it feel like cheap even though FRN is a very sturdy material. Some people buy Wilkins G10 handles and switch them but its pretty expensive. With the Grip's thicker handels it is'nt as comfortable to carry IMO even though its lightweight.
So between the 2 folders I prefer the 710 but you would have to consider the price also.

I also recommend checking out the HK14205: http://www.benchmade.com/products/14205

The 710 will always be one of my favorites. But I'm beginning to like my 950 Rift even more. It's like a large Grip on steroids (I have a large Grip to compare it to), but with blade geometry (thin edge) that's better than any other Benchmade I'm aware of. I'd give the Rift serious consideration.
