Benchmade Rukus Question

My Rukus is a satin finish blade. The grinds looks even to me, no issues with the sharpening. However, if they were slightly uneven, I would just use it.
I have the later version without the Blackwood logo, which is good because I wasn't a fan of the large logo.

My 'pusher' has quite an assortment of BMs - and Surefires - at 'LEO' prices. My Rukus is marked $179.99 - the mini's are $10 less. I made it 'out the door' for less. Mine was the display, as the second box was empty, too. I am toying with the re-edging via my Sharpmaker. I am hesitant... it does cut well, just not a hair razor like the new Skirmishes were - or Spydies - or Bucks - or Kershaws, etc, are. Neat knife - definite 'pocket bushcraft' candidate.

i didn't even see your post to sell it.

and for that price u had to have bought it used.

Nope, bought it new.

A major outdoor hunting store was closing out the base 610 model.
I bought it for $100. At that price, I couldn’t resist.

I found a screaming good deal on the CF inserts a while later for $60

Total: $160

You didn’t see it on BF because I put it up for sale at a local knife dealer in town.

It’s a really impressive knife, I just didn’t carry it that much so I decided to let someone else fondle it for a while.

None of my Spyderco's seem to have that problem. Very even <30 degree bevels. Scary sharp too.

My 520 came pretty sharp but the primary bevels looks a bit off. Relative to the thumbstud the logo side was about 1/8" higher then the reverse (steel marked) side.

I have a Spyderco Pacific Salt that has some nasty uneven grinds. One side of the knife has the hollow grind end earlier than the other which resulted in the knife having a very funky looking tip. It doesn't hit liner or effect performance but nonetheless no production company is perfect, even if they our favorite one. ;)

It was also less than impressive out of the box, wouldn't pop hairs. A little work on the sharpmaker and it would tho.

Okay. Thanks. Why did they stop the logo?

Once Mr. Blackwood and Benchmade ceased their collaboration efforts the logos stopped appearing on the knife. If you have a BM knife with a designer logo on it that means when that knife was produced the designer and BM had an active "relationship".

Gee, mine has the Blackwood gargoyle logo, perfect grinds and carbon fiber inserts.

I only paid $160 for the whole shebang.

Maybe I should keep it.

Maybe you should. Congrats on a good find??

No pictures in this thread??? Ok, let's fix that.....

I agree, the Rukus is too big (for me) to carry in my normal spot: in the waistband. So I made a sheath that rides horizontally on my belt.

I kindly messed up the back of the sheath when making the loop for the belt, but it functions ok:

My Rukus came razor sharp and without a burr. I'll consider myself lucky. Well, the luck was that Sportsman's Warehouse was having a clearance on many of their knives. My Rukus cost me $100 even, no tax, brand new in the box. ((( :D )))

The rukus I use for EDC came with logo, 100% even and sharp, no bur. I ordered a 2nd just a couple days ago in case this one ever breaks and it had no logo, a patent number, but was sharp but not as sharp as the first. I'll check the grinds when I get home.

And that case above is amazing. Make it in black, put a price on it and I'll buy one from you in a heartbeat. PM me if you're interested.

Stretch...that sheath is awesome. Nice work. With the Rukus series, you are getting alot of knife for the money. G-10/Micarta, S30V steel. Shaving sharp out of the box. They are built like tanks and are one of my favorite blades.

I have heard people on the different forums complain about the pocket clips breaking. I have not experienced this. Congrats.

Check to see if the burr rides where the spacer on the handle is. I sent mine back to Benchmade cause the blade hit the spacer. They fixed it quick, sent it back and paid for overnight shipping.

Just checked my new one. Grinds are perfect on it. Only difference is whoever or whatever put a better bevel on this one than my original. Also the g10 is almost smooth without the rolling carved look.

I don't see the clip breaking, mine looks like it's been through a war and is still fine. Although it doesn't look as bad as my skirmish's clip, that thing caught on anything and everything.

my knife is already sent back to benchmade. i was going to have knifnut1013 sharpen it but after i seen that the blade didn't sit correctly and if u ran your finger across the bottom u could feel it.the blade was right at the tip of the bottom.. it went back. they said they will fix any problem with the knife. i will let u guys know what happens when i get it back.

as for the clip mine worked fine. maybe they fixed teh issue with the weak clips?

I loved mine, the blade shape is superb. The handle looks terrible, but is comfortable. The weight of the blade forced on the pivot loosens it pretty fast, if you flick it open. I had a couple, first a black combo edge, then a satin model. I liked both, but got rid of them. Just personal preference.

The grind on mine looks good. Not very sharp but that should be easy to fix. This thread actually caused me to dig it out and I realized that I really have not even used/carried it after I picked it up. I'll have to put it into EDC rotation and see how well it works.

Ok just go give u guys an update on the knife. i just got it back today . it took them a total of 10 days for them to fix it and send it back to me which i think is really good timing. the knife came back PERFECT. after reviewing the knife they said the blade needed to be replaced so they went ahead with it. so if any1 ever has any questions of how good their warranty department is i would say very good.

the blade also did come sharp with no variations in edge degree. also the blade grind on this blade is even on this one. the blade isn't right at the edge of the handle to bite u if u grab it wrong.

now it's time to beat it up :)

My 615 is about a year old and has symmetrical grinds. Was not overly sharp when I first bought it but one pass though each of the Sharpmaker stones and the hair will just jump off my arm.

I use this knife pretty hard and have had no issues with edge retention. The clip is a little weak but overall a great hard-user.

Its easy to see on spyderco's because the grind stops before the choil, you can visually compare the plung grind and this is how I found out my problem was not with my sharpening but with the knife.

The picture is of my delica and it was yet another example of a bad sharpening, when I first got it the edge angle was around 50deg, dull and unpolished. It was when I used my DMT aligner to cut the bevel back is when I notice one edge bevel was getting bigger than the other. After a long time of scratching my head and trying to adjust the angle to make it even I finally called DMT and they suggested that the knife itself may not be even. They were right and now that I look I find it more common. Its not a big deal but its something you will find if you use a guided sharpener.

As for factory sharpness I feel that its good enough to do work but I've only seen a small handfull of knives that I would ever consider sharp. I also sharpen to a higher standard and I don't think I have used a factory edge in 15+ years.

your knives are much much sharper then a factory edge. was just letting people know they didn't send me a dull knife.

I actually didn't even see you post about getting it back until after I posted. Glad to hear they are still keeping up with good CS and turn around times, I got the same 5 star treatment with my mini-rukus.

I still kick myself for passing on a satin plain edge Ruckus from Sportsman's Warehouse that was on sale for $100.00 a good while back.

And not too long ago I was waffling on whether to buy a Skirmish. By the time I finally decided to pull the trigger, it became known that the knife was being discontinued and I couldn’t find one to buy that wasn’t exorbitantly priced.

But there are lots of great knives out there and I ended up getting a CF S90V Military and I now understand what all the hoopla is about. I would still love to have a Skirmish because not only does it appear to be a beast of a knife, it is a really beautiful looking knife.

Glad to hear Benchmade’s CS provided good service and I’m sure you’ll love the knife.

I am glad this thread came back up. I'd looked every where for that Sharpmaker - I hid it well this time. I went to the Gulf Coast for a week, ending the first of the month. The new BMs accompanied me - and had a new friend, a 710 D2, join them on the way home as a birthday gift from my wife - neat! Anyway, one hot & rainy afternoon, I found myself imitating John Greco at a local gunshow. I started drawing my 610 across my jean shorts pant's leg in a honing motion. I did this 15-20 times each side. The knife seems to be more even, although it's still no hair popper.

Of course, the Sharpmaker was found - yesterday - between my router & DSL modem and my PC's UPS. Why did I put it there? Anyway, I may try it... it does cut wood & trim bark well as-is. I thought it would make a decent pocket bushcraft knife.

I think the reason John's scrawny legs work better is that they act like the Sharpmaker file's edge, while my fat thighs are more like the flats. Anyone seen John Greco in a while? He hasn't made the Birmingham AGCA shows in a while - and a friend didn't see him at Atlanta's Blade show this year.

I like this knife!

My new 610 and my recently new Kershaw JYDII in Ti/SG-2 - which is the sharpest knife I've ever owned.
