Benchmade Rukus & SOG Tomcat 3.0

ATM I will stick with the folder but thanks for the suggestion on a fixed. Will seriously look at a SOG Seal Elite for a quality fixed blade unit very soon.

For serious hunting/skinning/caping...etc fixed blades, check out Buck. They make some beautiful, but more importantly functional pieces for all types. It's kinda they're specialty;)

I'm another that prefers a fixed blade for hunting, but I'm not going to try to convince you - you know your own mind best!

I have both the 710 and the Rukus. I think the Rukus (or Mini-R - I've had both) will do better for your use. I frequently carry the 710 IWB, and it's great for that, because of the thinness of the design. But the Rukus will out perform it inside a big deer, due to the ergonomics of the handle. The Rukus does fine for me in a front pocket carry - amazingly so for a big knife! The Rukus is also slightly easier to keep sharp, since it does not have the recurved edge of the 710.

Clean-up on the Rukus is a snap, assuming you've got some water handy. Construction is wide open, and gunk is easy to flush out. (Of course, this is absolutely no problem for a FB, but...:D )

Fixed blades for hunting IMO, I read something on another forum of a BM axis lock failing while the guy was field dressing a buck. I think it was a griptillian. You might want to check out a bark river, falkniven or RC-4. I wasn't really impressed by Sog's quality.

I ended up ordering the Benchmade 710D2. Should work well for my application, will see.

Will look at the 610 & 615 Rukus in the near future, cant have enough blades(grin). Thanks all for the help.

Hey, glad to see that you made a choice, but for what it's worth, the Ruckus should definately be considered. I have the big 610 and it is one of the best all around performers out there. That says alot since I am partial to the Spyderco brand.:D

This folder just begs to be used and hard. The only thing that I have done for my taste is took a dremel to the exposed axis lock so I would not slip up and hit it while in use. It takes a deliberate press now, but still can be done one handed with ease.

If you have big hands then you will love this big boy. It was made with folks with large mittens. I heard the designer of this folder has big hands also. The only other thing that I will do to this folder is get some of those aftermarket handles. Take care all and God Bless!

Rukus is an excellent knife, solid, flat ground, great ergos... but really big. I like really big folders so that's no problem for me. The 710 is also a great knife, much smaller, much more like a gentleman's folder, at least to me, than an outdoorsy knife, though its a good solid knife and I wouldn't complain if that was the knife that made it outdoors with me. Have you thought about the Skirmish? Great knife, titanium frame lock, but unlike the Rukus or 710 it's got a lot of belly and a true drop point, so that might appeal to dealing with deer.

Tomcat ... no pocket clip is a big deal for me ... as a comfort issue ... otherwise looks good but I probably would lean to BM.
