Benchmade Skirmish

P.S. Why is there no Benchmade sub-forum on BF?

Questions about Bladeforums itself belong in Tech Support, where the call for a Benchmade forum comes up periodically.

From the FAQ

I don't see [Company X] represented, why not?

We do not provide "unofficial" company or "fan" forums for any manufacturer. In order for there to be a dedicated forum for any specific company, they must show the willingness to take part in the discussion.

If you do not see your favorite manufacturer listed here, visit their website and contact them by phone or email, and request that they join in. If enough of their customers have a demand for it, they will come.

I looked at the site previously. I noticed the blade is MUCH larger as well on the custom. It's 5.5 inches long 11.5 total vs. 4.3 and 9.7 overall. I would love to have a custom!

I'd like the Skirmish if it were not fancied up with decoration like a prom dress. A plain Jane Skirmish with no sequins or swirls would be great. And just one Spydie hole.

But then it wouldn't be Neil Blackwood's design! :D The three holes are a sort of trademark for him, and if you think the BM Skirmishes are too fancied-up, you ought to see what he rolls out himself! Definitely not your average folding "pocket knife." :D

I just picked one up, was looking for about a week before I found one I could afford... It's a great blade so far (got it a few days ago)... It's a MONSTER knife however, and I will be carrying this one only once in a while, only because it's illegal sizewise where I live. I definitely am searching for a "mini" skirmish (and I say "mini" cause it's a medium large folder IMO)... Carries very well for it's size since it is so thin, fit and finish is immaculate and I love the looks of it... It really is a beauty and the beast kinda knife... I say get one!! It's a great blade!!

I just bought a BM mini Skirmish. :D

The 630 Skirmish is a keeper... a slutty looking keeper. See below for a size comparison.

That is, top down, Skirmish, ZT-301, Kershaw JYDII in Ti & SG2, a Wilson Combat/CRK Umnumzaan, and a Buck 172 Mayo TNT.

oOo bery bery nice, I like! :D

I really hate having gotten into knives when I did, because it seems like it was just after all these models were discontinued.

If it's so well received why was it discontinued?

GPK has one that is NIB for sale.

Heads-up: I bought a 635BK from them (about 2 years ago), and when I got it, the blade was so off center that it was rubbing against the inside of the left handle and rubbing the black coating off the blade. I spoke to the purveyor (can't remember his name now), and he insisted that "they are all like that" and insinuated that I didn't know of what I spoke. I tried to explain to him that I have been collecting personal cutlery for over 20 years, and I know exactly of what I speak -- and on point: I already had another 635 (non-BK), and it was perfectly centered. He dismissed me, I returned the knife, and I will never deal with them again.

That's just my personal experience, and it may not represent the typical experience, but I wanted to make it known. Buyer beware, IMHO. . . .

Eh, I've bought every knife I own from them and never had a problem. Then again, that's about 5 knives.

I really want a new one of these now. I guess I'll go watch YouTube videos to make it even worse.

My point wasn't so much that there was a problem - problems happen. It was how they handled it (or, dismissed it, I should say).

I just bought one of the M390 Mini-Grips from them and they bent over backwards for me with changes in shipping, a hijacked credit card number and matching the # to my other M390 LEs, so I'd give GPK very high marks for customer service today.

Once you get past the Skirmish's good looks and start using it, you'll quickly find out that it's as tough as any other folder there. The name Skirmish is a nod to fact that this is a combat ready folder.

(My first post)

Ive had both the Skirmish and Mini Skirmish for many years and carried the Mini daily during this time. Excellent knives! Tough, stout, and light. I love the frame lock simple set up. The slight recurve is tough to sharpen on a flat stone but it works very well. I bought them when I first learned about the hot new blade steel sometime around 2000.

I took a permanent marker to the Skirmish silly color pattern, probably a mistake now that I read about their current value!

I also have a BM635 Mini-Skirmish - love that knife!
It's the knife I carry when I wear 'nicer weekend going out on the town' clothes. Plus, it's one of the few folders I EDC that don't seem to chew up my pockets - either from the clip or the top part of the knife rubbing against the back side of the pocket itself.

Also not sure how BM heat-treats its S30V, but my Mini-Skirmish REALLY holds an edge nicely. More so than some other S30V folders...

Regards,
Mike
