Benchmade Vex, I'm impressed.

An interesting thing about the Vex. I was driving through San Francisco and I saw protestors outside of a KFC with signs saying that the chickens were "burned alive". The Vex can cut chicken, right?

kgriggs8, is that Anna Nicole Smith in your avatar? If so, I'm going to have to respectfully disagree with your taste my good sir.

I'll be interested to hear how the Vex's steel does in edge-holding for general use. Reading BM's catalog, I noticed its steel is listed at a lower hardness than BM's other knives, and wonder why. It looks like a cool knife, though. Even though it's fairly inexpensive, these days I won't even buy a cheap (priced) knife if it doesn't seem worth it. Also, is the darkened finish on the blade a bit more scratch-resistant than the BT2 coating?
Jim

Been a couple of threads about the Vex. Seems like the edge holding is pretty fair. The steel composition is about equal to that of AUS8. From what I can read into the posts, so is the edge holding.

Wet day today wasn't it.

Hell no! That is not Anna. It is a MILF with no name. LOL!

Anyway, I never understood what was so cool and fun about being cruel to animals. I work construction and there is a sort of tough guy attitude about treating animals poorly. I guess a "real man" is supposed to kick dogs and smash hamsters against his forehead like a beer can. Whatever. From what I have seen in my life, people that go out of there way to be mean to animals are always little punks inside. They get zero respect from me if I find out.

I do not go overboard, I eat beef and chicken, I just don't torture them first. I figuire killing and eating them is bad enough, I don't need to beat them alive with a stick to make them more tender. Apparently that is what they do to dogs in SE Asia. I have seen the video and it turned my stomach.

The Vex is clip reversable for right and left hand but not tip up/tip down. It is tip down left or right.

My vex is really nice for the money. The blade is a bit hard to open, but lock up is good. Price was right...

Actually, where I am the it's been pretty dry, but grey and threatening nonetheless. Supposed to be a clear weekend.

I just might have to give the Vex a try. Although I'm probably going to save up for a Dejavoo first.

A few years ago, there was a scandal about KFC's chicken suppliers killing chickens right here in the U.S. by taking them and cruelly slamming them up against the wall, which was captured on video. I don't think you can condemn an entire people because some from that culture do a certain act. I lived in Taiwan for eight years and saw some animal cruelty, but definitely not from the majority of people there.
It seems to be a Western stereotype that all Far-Eastern people all eat dogs and cats, and it is NOT true.

$40.00 is the cheapest I found on eBay, right now.

First post said he paid $30.00 for it.

Yes, Spyderco offers great value for the money, but not if you can't find any designs you actually like.

Yes, the MSRP is $60.00 USD. Average street prices are obviously lower, but it still sells for roughly twice what its direct competition costs.

"MSRP for the Vex is $60.00. Excessive, in my opinion, but it is what it is."

$60 MSRP for a well made G-10 folder with dual steel liners from Benchmade is excessive?

They go about $40 new. I bought a LNIB Vex and a used CE Delica for $55 so my guess was that I paid about $30 for the Vex. When you buy two knives at one price, it is hard to split up the prices.

Maybe the Vex is not for everyone but I think for the money, it is a good deal. In fact, I think it is one of the best deals for about $40. Maybe I am crazy but $40 doesn't buy what it used to. The closest I can compare it to is a Mini Griptilian. To be totaly honest, I like the Vex better than the Mini Grip. I think it is a better design blade and seems to cut better.

When you can purchase a well-made G-10 folder with dual steel liners, an arguably stronger lock, and very similar (and harder) blade steel from a division of Spyderco for an MSRP of half that price, yes.

I don't doubt that the Vex is a fine knife. My point is only that Benchmade isn't offering anything that the G-10 Byrds don't, at least not from a materials or functional perspective, so what makes it "worth" twice the price?

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder. I find the Vex more "beautiful" than any of the Byrd offerings. I might pay an extra $20 for the difference in aesthetics.

Fair enough. Aesthetics isn't really something that can be quantified, and everyone has his or her own preferences. I'm sure the Vex's appearance and design appeals to many individuals.

Well I ordered two of them for 39 a piece and I am pretty happy with them. I just dont really care for the clip. I think it is a nice looking knife the blade coating is definitely better looking than BT2 in my opinion and it was pretty sharp out of the box. Im happy with it for the money it will be in my edc rotation.

The Byrd looks like one of the 200 shop at home knives you can get for 20 bucks.

The Vex....looks like a Benchmade.
