Benchmade vs. Cold Steel

Stronger, tougher, tougher, stronger. I'm going to have to get my knife vocabulary up to speed, I guess. Anyway, as far as rust resistance goes, I was under the impression that AUS 8 was less likely to rust. Can anyone confirm this. Thanks.

AUS-8 is unfairly maligned. It's very corrosion resistant and takes a good edge. It doesn't keep the edge forever, but it's easy to get it back.

That said, get a Benchmade 710 or 940. They're two of the best knives anywhere, ever--never mind the comparison at hand.

Benchmade 940 or any of them for that matter. Don't own an Ascent model so can't comment.
CS fixed blades are Good IMO. Go w/ BM for folders though.

Well, I guess you question has struck a chord.

I agree with all the positive comments made about Benchmade knives and I own a slew of them. However, for an everyday knife which will take a beating and always do its job, Cold Steel Voyagers are hard to beat. They are light weight, their locks are reliable, they hold an edge, and they are very, very sharp. Unlike many other knives that possess more mystique, the Voyagers are, I admit, rather plain, but they work, every time all the time. Unless I am missing something, that is why one carry's a knife.

well imho CS is an excellent entry level knfe, and a good 1 for the $$ - BUT BM is a MUCH better, albeit more expensive piece - just no comparison when ya have each in your hand, believe me - G10, CF handles vs zytel, better steel in the blade (no doubt in my mind about this point) better ergonomics, liner vs lockback(i im 1 of those people who find nothing wrong w/a well designed and manufactured lockback) the list could go on and on.

REKAT is the same, probably better in some areas than BM, though you have a smaller selection - the SIFU is hard to beat in a production knife imho - carnivour is darned good too

if you have the $$ for a BM, there are many other intersying breands also, spyderco, emerson, micro tech, etc

1 place on the net is selling the old model BM AFCK combo edge silver blade for about $65, a better deal on a quality knife is not available, imho - were i to be restricted to less than a 5.5" blade ala SIFU, and didnt have my crawford kasper, my #1 choice would be my BM AFCK black plain edge - knife fits my hand well, good ergos, 100% better than the AFCK11 in mho, and better than any CS too imho - wouldnt trade mine for a CS for whatever thats worth..

hope this helps ya out

Well, I've only owned one Benchmade, and that left a bad taste in my mouth. It was the Ascent model, and I wish I had never bought it. It was not sharp out of the box, had a large amount of blade play, and the tip was actually missing some steel off one side(hard to explain) Also, the pocket clip could not be switched, because the area where the clip went was not formed properly, and left the end of the clip sticking about 3/4 of an inch off the handle. Ended up giving that one to a friend as a beater. Now I've owned a few Cold Steel folders, and don't really have any complaints about them. They are solid, and take a scary edge. I also like the feel of their handles, especially compared to the Ascent. They may be cheap looking, but they do the job. Also, I have no problems flicking out my Larger Voyager when it's clean. I must admit it would be nice if Cold Steel would offer knives with premium materials. I'm not saying that I won't buy Benchmade again, but I'd be leary of getting one of their high end folders unless it was a good deal.

well i guess i have been lucky or you unlucky as i have the AFCK, and a stryker, both excellent knives, and 2 wks ago got a AFCK on closeout from www.newgraham,com , the std silver blade part serrated - excellent knife(about $65) - 2 friends of mine also got AFCK's from NG, a AFCK black w/plain dege, 154CM steel (both of my AFCK's are 154CM) and a AFCK w/the special M2 or D2 steel, black plain edge - both excellent knives - all the BM's i have seen have been top notch well made knives.....
